Eagerly Listening

By Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

Thousands of Adventist teachers listened to a worship presentation at the National Teachers’ Convention as the speaker challenged them to walk with God and let God work through them to bring the joy of God to the lives of their students.

As I glanced around the large room during the sermon, I noticed the attentiveness in which the teachers listened to the speaker. Some were laughing, tearing up, or were captivated as the speaker drew them in and led them to make their own personal commitments.

This moment with the teachers made me think of Acts 1:3, where it tells us Jesus spent 40 days after His resurrection presenting Himself to His followers and showing by “infallible proofs” that He had risen. The most important part of this Bible verse states that Jesus was speaking to them about the things “pertaining to the kingdom of God.”

Continue reading to see how Doug connects the 40 days Jesus spent talking with His followers to his own daily walk with God!

Pastors Hear About Single Mothers' Ministry Opportunities!

Why is it important to focus on supporting the single mothers in your community?

Jennifer Maggio, author and founder of thelifeofasinglemom.com, reported to Washington Conference pastors that the fastest growing demographic in the United States is single mothers!

According to Maggio, there are 15 million single mothers raising 22 million children in the United States; these children are ten times more likely to drop out of school and five times more likely to commit suicide.

Maggio encouraged pastors to find local leaders to help address the needs of single mothers in their community who need support and a safe place to feel God's love. Maggio shared her story about her personal life experience and how she started The Life of a Single Mom (read and listen to her story).

"You don't have to be all things to all single moms," says Maggio. "Use your network. People have to know you love them before they accept your message or your church."

Church Ministers Through Veggie Food!

For the past eight years, Port Townsend SDA Church has been serving vegetarian food options and distributing Christian literature to fair goers at the Jefferson County Fair! This year, they served veggie burgers and veggie dogs to over 200 people!

"The fair booth is an amazing way to touch the lives of a lot of people over the span of 3 days," says Greg Reseck, Veggie Hut coordinator and Port Townsend church member. "I love meeting new people. I get a chance to witness about our health message. It's a lot of fun!"

On Sabbath, the Veggie Hut remains open to continue serving vegetarian options...but instead of prices, they accept donations for the food. A percentage of these donations are then given to causes, such as the homeless shelter.
