The Lingering Presence of God's Love

by Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

One of the interesting things that I read this week about the coronavirus was how long this virus can last on different surfaces.

Of course, as a pastor, it made me think of something else that should be a lingering presence for all of us in this time. Ephesians 5 opens with this counsel: “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Our Continuing Coronavirus Response

Effective Tuesday, March 17, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in western Washington is adopting a virtual model of ministry and continues to join in the social and civic responsibility to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

This virtual model of ministry applies to all churches, schools, the conference office and ministries based on public health and denominational guidelines.

"Call three people to pray with and encourage today."

Randy Maxwell, Renton pastor and Washington Conference Prayer Ministries coordinator, took this challenge seriously the week. He pulled out archived banners from previous evangelism meetings, flipped them over, and used black tape to spell out the words "Need Prayer." He posted the roadside banners outside his church, brought out a couple folding chairs, and sat in front of the sign to be ready to pray with any church neighbors who needed encouragement.

Neighbors waved in passing and called out "God bless you" or "Thank you for the offer." Evangelist Nemaia Faletogo joined Pastor Randy at the street to pray for the neighborhood and to answer a couple phone calls for prayer to the church phone number (posted on the church's regular sign). Pastor Randy plans to offer his neighbors a time of prayer additional times this week and beyond.

This is a time for practical and creative ministry to interact with people in no touch, high-impact ways. What ministry idea do you plan to try?
