Rooted in Faith

By Heidi Baumgartner, Washington Conference communication director

When I walked into church on Sabbath morning, two of my nieces were singing “10,000 Reasons.” This was particularly fitting: Four generations of my family worshiped together last Sabbath in the same congregation where we have five generations of history.

For 121 years, my family watched the sun come up in our Central California valley. With the passing of generations, we saw new days dawning, saying good-byes and hellos, sometimes not knowing what may pass or what lies before us. And yet, God gives us resilience to keep singing, to keep praising, to keep claiming God’s promises and blessings.

This is the legacy I want to pass on: to be rooted in faith and to nurture the faith of the next generation.

ADRA Ready to Respond to Hurricane Dorian

ADRA’s team on the ground in the Bahamas are calling the now Category 4 storm “the worst hurricane we’ve ever experienced.” Entire towns have lost all of their homes, communication has been cut in much of the region, and most residents are taking shelter.

The full extent of Hurricane Dorian’s damage in the Bahamas has yet to be seen as access to many areas isn’t possible yet, but it’s clear that there is an urgent need for food, clean water, and other emergency supplies.

Religious Liberty at the Net

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s Executive Board voted Tuesday to change its rules regarding religious observance when it comes to postseason competition.

The rule change was in response to a lawsuit by two tennis players from W.F. West High School in Chehalis. Joseph and Joelle Chung from Chehalis, Wash., are Seventh-day Adventists, which requires the observation of Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. The state tennis tournaments wrap up on Saturdays.

Principals of Spiritual Leadership

Principals representing our 19 school campuses gathered for their first Principals' Council of the school year.

They participated in a leadership book discussion, reviewed education survey data, networked and shared ideas, welcome new principals to the group, discussed local school transportation solutions, and shared ideas.

We have phenomenal spiritual leaders for our Adventist Christian Schools who are dedicated to God, their families, and their schools! Please join us in praying for these leaders to be filled with God's wisdom as they serve Him day by day.

Versacare, Inc., is offering $5,000 technology grants for small schools and $10,000 grants for larger schools for STEM funding up to $1 million for Adventist schools in North America. Talk with your local principal and teachers to dream about what your school could do with extra funding for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education!
