Back From Nashville and Oct.1st TAP Benefit Boston!

Oct. 1st TAP Benefit 6pm Concert at 7:15:  Buy Tix Here!

Wow! What a whirlwind!  You early supporters of my Indiegogo Campaign gave me the courage to hop in the car and drive down to Nashville, even before the campaign was through! I hope you watched the excitement in real time on FB as the funds came in. You made it possible for me to begin recording after almost eight years! We tracked seven songs and lead vocals so far. Finishing the project will take about a year. I am SO excited for this head start and for you to hear the music!  I felt like you were all with me and have posted updates, pictures and some homemade videos of the process at the Indiegogo site. Click on Update for my update, and Gallery for the photo and Video Gallery.

THIS THURSDAY OCT 1st at Club Cafe: Boston, come hear full band arrangements of some of these new songs along with older favorites! I am SO excited for this special evening and to be playing with some of Boston's finest Bluesmen: Chris Rivelli (drums), Marc Hickox (bass), Patrick Flaherty (guitar), and Kenny Clark (organ). I cannot WAIT to experience the uplifting set of Rev. Yolanda opening for us.

What is TAP?  How Did Laura Get Involved?

Music expands our world and helps us find common ground: I met Claudia Hoover, founder of TAP (Transgender Access Partnership), through a good friend, who told her about my music.  Claudia became a fan, and asked me to be the headliner for a benefit she had envisioned for TAP, an organization she had founded in honor of her beautiful son, Livingston, who had passed away.  Liv had transitioned from female to male. As Claudia and her daughter (Liv’s twin sister) told me about Liv, it was clear he had been an incredible person who had been full of love and beauty; a true light in the world.  I saw his incredible artwork and got a sense of the kind of energy and vision he had brought into the world to make it a better place.  TAP addresses the needs of transgender youth in MA who are an incredibly vulnerable population. They eperience high levels of parental rejection, as a result, homelessness, lack of access to services, and high suicide rates. When Claudia asked me to be a part of the evening, I said yes immediately.
Worlds converge:
I told Claudia, “Hey, I know Faith Soloway who is writing for Transparent!” The incredibly talented and amazing Faith graciously and whole-heartedly agreed to come be a part of the evening even before her sister’s hit show (which Faith is a writer for) had swept the Golden Globes and Emmys.
When I am not writing you newsletters or playing music, I teach private music lessons in the Boston area.  Last week, I came home from recording in Nashville to begin my busy teaching schedule. One of my beautifully talented seventeen-year-old voice students in Wellesley said to me, “Hey! My mom and I saw you in the PFLAG newsletter!  You’re playing a benefit for TAP?!”
“Yeah!” I said, excited that she had seen it, “How did you happen to see the PFLAG ad?”
“Well, I’m transgender,” my student, who, as close as we are, had never shared with me until now.  She said, “My mom and I were both like, ‘How is LAURA involved with PFLAG?!’
As the mother of a transgender child, Claudia says, “We need allies.” And that is the role I am playing in this benefit.  This is a new world to me, and I am learning about it because of the personal relationships in my life and the people I care about.  I learned that there is a much larger transgender community than I realized right in my community.  I learned about WAGLY, to support teens and families of the GLBTQ community right here in Wellesly, MA. Faith, who is active in the LGBT community will introduce me, and  Rev. Yolanda,"gender bending performer" and member of the GLBT Hall of Fame, will open for me and my guys.  I was so proud to be playing with Chris Rivelli and the band. When I explained to the guys that we would be playing a benefit for transgender youth at one of Boston’s premiere gay clubs, their reaction was, “Sounds like fun!”

And it will be! Come celebrate, learn, sing, and dance with us!  It will be an incredible evening. Bring your friends. Be yourself.
