In Pennsylvania, children sometimes spend time in adult jails --before they are convicted of anything. And a girl can be held in adult jail before a judge decides whether her case should be heard in adult court.
When girls are put in adult jails, they are often held in what amounts to solitary confinement because regulations require that children are separated from adults. Such isolation can have devastating effects.

Read My’s story hereWhen YSRP started five years ago, our focus was Philadelphia. But we knew that we would need to work outside of the city if we were to truly transform the way children are treated in the adult justice system. In 2019, YSRP expanded our case advocacy model to two counties just outside the city. A. was our first young woman client-partner in suburban Montgomery County. Like My, A. is a creative, talented and resilient young woman. Like My, A. had no prior contact with the justice system when she was charged as an adult. Read A.’s story here.

In 2020, we will continue to press to realize our ultimate goal: that children should not be charged as adults, and they should not be held in adult jails and prisons. Please join us in this fight and make a year-end donation now.

With very best wishes to you, your family and your community this holiday season,
