Penn State Extension is teaming up with local organic crop growers and Pennsylvania Certified Organic to offer on-farm educational opportunities for farmers interested in organic and/or biological farming. The meetings focus on organic production of agronomic crops. Come prepared to walk in fields. The meetings are free and open to all interested persons. 

MEETING #1
When: Thursday, August 27th at 6:00PM to 9:00PM (food & beverage available beginning at 5:30PM).
Where: Banner Farm, owned by Douglas & Trisha Thomas, farmed in cooperation with Carl Schmidt
What: Carl is in the first year of an organic transition for this farm. He is experimenting with an unconventional approach to transition. Part of the farm is soybeans no-till planted into rye and the remain- der is no-till planted into corn stalks. We will discuss the strategies and challenges of transitioning to organic crop production.
Also, Charlie White, Extension Associate with Penn State, will discuss soil biology assessments and how to interpret the results. Charlie has been working with Carl on a soil testing project on the farm.

Meeting #2
When: Friday Oct 9, 9:30AM to noon.
Where: Harvey Hoover farm at 2320 Kaiser Run Road, Millmont, PA 17845. 
What: Harvey is hosting interseeder plots for the Penn State ROSE (reduced- tillage organic systems experiment) project. The plots were planted into field corn on June 26th. The plots feature several species of cover crops including ryegrass, radishes, and red clover. Speakers from the Penn State Plant Science Department will be available to discuss the project.

Materials Program Manager
Pennsylvania Certified Organic (PCO) announces a job opening for Materials Program Manager. This position will oversee PCO’s material review program, including the publication of PCO Materials Lists, developing policies relevant to material review under the organic regulations, and will actively perform material review. The ideal candidate will have education and experience in the following areas: knowledge of materials used in organic production and processing, familiarity with regulatory compliance and organic certification, knowledge of organic standards. We are looking for a well-organized and self-motivated person to join our team-oriented environment in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania; telecommuting will be considered. The planned start date for this position is Dec 2015.
 
This is a full-time, exempt position.

Salary range: $45,000 – 55,000, depending on experience.

Certification Program Manager

This position will also be responsible for maintaining policies to be consistent with federal regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have education and experience in the following areas: familiarity with regulatory compliance and organic certification, knowledge of organic standards. We are looking for a well-organized and self-motivated person to join our team-oriented environment in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania (on-site preferred; telecommuting considered). The planned start date for this position is Dec 2015.

2015 Sunset Review Proposed Rule-
Comments Due August 31st
 
AMS announces that it is proposing to implement the National Organic Standards Board sunset review recommendations and invites the organic community, stakeholders, and consumers to review the Proposed Rule and submit written comments.
 
The 2015 Sunset Review Proposed Rule was published on Thursday, July 30, 2015. Public comments on this proposed rule will be accepted until August 31, 2015.
