He wanted to wage war on poverty from the front lines. To that end, he applied and was accepted into a Master of City Planning program. When faced with the enormous costs of education, and living expenses, his battle with poverty almost became personal. He contacted the Hebrew Free Loan Association of Greater Washington and applied for an interest free student loan to help him pay for his graduate studies.
Not one to let his passion wait until his studies were finished, Mike worked for the Urban Displacement Project and eventually completed his Master's thesis on preserving affordable housing in gentrifying neighborhoods.
Thanks to his hard work and with help from our loan, Mike graduated in 2016 and now works for a company dedicated to developing affordable housing on the West Coast. He repaid his loan to the HFLAGW, allowing the money to go back toward helping other students in need, and is now the force for good in the world that he dreamed of.
In his own words, Mike says, “I have grown intellectually and professionally. I’m thrilled about the experience.”
Help us help others like Mike.
The Hebrew Free Loan Association of Greater Washington provides interest free loans for personal, business and student needs. HFLAGW loans are funded entirely by community donations which recirculate to others, generating many times the original value to help maintain and grow the lives in our community
