Healthy Schools e-Newsletter Regina area

 
Please share with your administration, teachers, other school staff, and school community council.  There is something for everyone!   

This newsletter was put together by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) Regina Area Health Promotion Department of Population and Public Health Services - based on feedback received from school stakeholders about the desired format and content. Each month we will highlight up-to-date health information, resources, programs, training, and initiatives available and coming up near your school.  Each newsletter will also include a feature topic. French resources will be highlighted by 'FR.'

April is Oral Health Month!

Preventing dental disease and protecting oral health for school aged kids


Your SHA oral health professionals offer fluoride varnish and dental sealant services to over 40 schools in the Regina and surrounding areas! These services are offered to students in kindergarten, pre-kindergarten, grades 1 and 2, and help prevent tooth decay before it happens or detect it early on.

What can schools do to support and teach oral health?

  • Encourage students to brush their teeth or rinse their mouths with water after eating. 
  • Start a brushing buddies program where older students brush their teeth with younger students after lunch.
  • Don't provide sugary drinks or sweets. If you do, offer them with other foods.

We invite you to engage your students in some fun games, activities, quizzes, colouring sheets, class projects and more to highlight the importance of oral health:

April's School Nutrition Information Poster

This Month's Nutrition Information Poster is: "Finding Good Nutrition Information Online" - En français: "Trouver l’information sur la nutrition En ligne"

The Public Health Nutritionists of Saskatchewan have developed a nutrition information poster for each month of the school year. This information can be posted in the school, used in newsletters, as a part of school announcements, posted on the school website or used for Facebook or Twitter posts. Saskatchewan Polytech Dental Clinic


Did you know that Sask Polytech’s dental clinic at the Regina campus offers dental hygiene and services at a reduced cost?

Dental care is provided by licensed dental therapists, dentists and dental assistants who are assisted by Sask Polytech dental assisting students. Dental hygiene care is provided by Sask Polytech students, under the supervision of licensed dental hygienists and dentists.

Nutrition and Oral Health workshop for families 

Health Promotion is presenting at one of the Family Nights at the Albert Branch Regina Public Library. At this interactive evening learn about cooking with healthy ingredients, taste test healthy recipes, learn the link between good nutrition and oral health, and learn ways to keep your mouth and teeth healthy. There will be activities for kids and the whole family to do together.  
  • Who should attend: Anyone - adults, children and youth
  • Date and Time: Tuesday May 21st  - Free dinner served at 6 p.m., activities and information from 6:45-8 p.m.
  • Location: Albert Branch Regina Public Library (3355 6th Avenue)

Talk Tuesdays at Balcarres Community School

The Balcarres Community School and Saskatchewan Health Authority present “Talk Tuesday.”  Together, on the third Tuesday of each month they showcase a health and wellness topic of interest for the school and community.

  • What: Free supper and presentation
  • Dates and Times:  5:30- 7 p.m. April 16th Sexual Health, HIV and Hep C, AND May 21st Mental Health
