Healthy Schools e-Newsletter Regina area

 
Please share with your administration, teachers, other school staff, and school community council.  There is something for everyone!   

This newsletter was put together by the Saskatchewan Health Authority Regina Area Health Promotion Department of Population and Public Health Services - based on feedback received from school stakeholders about the desired format and content. Each month we will highlight up-to-date health information, resources, programs, training, and initiatives available and coming up near your school.  Each newsletter will also include a feature topic. French resources will be highlighted by 'FR.'

What is a School Wellness Team?
  • A group of people who are interested in improving the health and well-being of their school community.
  • Includes: an individual as a champion with a passion to guide the team; students; teachers; other school staff; school administrators; parents/guardians; and community partners. 
  • Works together to plan and carry out activities to help build a healthy school community.
When schools have wellness teams, research shows they are more likely to see lasting improvements in the school environment (Green et. al 2018).

March's School Nutrition Information Poster
This Month's Nutrition Information Poster is  "Understanding Food Labels," en français, "Lire Les Étiquettes Pour Faire Des Choix Alimentaires Sains?"

The Public Health Nutritionists of Saskatchewan have developed a different nutrition information poster for each month of the school year. This information can be posted in the school, used in newsletters, as a part of school announcements, posted on the school website or used for Facebook or Twitter posts. Raising a Healthy Happy Eater
  • Who should attend: Parents with kids ages 0-6. 
  • Next Date: April 3rd
  • Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m.
  • Location: Early Years Family Centre at St. Matthew School (4710 Castle Rd)

Put down those screens and pick up some active fun - for the whole family
Health Promotion is presenting at one of the Family Nights at the Albert Branch Regina Public Library. For this interactive evening we will be discussing strategies for setting limits on screen time at home and providing fun activity ideas for kids and the whole family to do together.  
  • Who should attend: Anyone - adults, children and youth
  • Date and Time: Tuesday April 2nd - Free dinner served at 6 p.m., activities and information from 6:45-8 p.m.
  • Location: Albert Branch Regina Public Library (3355 6th Avenue)

Talk Tuesdays at Balcarres Community School
The Balcarres Community School and Saskatchewan Health Authority present “Talk Tuesday.”  They are working together the third Tuesday of each month to showcase a health and wellness topic of interest for the school and community. 
  • Who should attend: parents, students and community
  • Date and Time: March 19th from 5:30- 7 p.m. Free supper and presentation on Diabetes. April 16th 5:30- 7 p.m. Free supper and presentation on Sexual Health, HIV and Hep C.
