Smart heating and cooling in EU

CELSIUS

To increase energy efficiency in EU, CELSIUS helps cities across Europe to develop secure, affordable and low carbon district heating and cooling solutions that form part of the city's wider energy system. The focus is on maximising the use of waste heat or secondary heat within a city by capturing and using it in the heating system.

Participating cities are Gothenburg (Lead partner), London and Islington Borough, Rotterdam, Cologne and Genua.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 314441.

Upcoming Conference: Heating and Cooling in the European energy transistion

The European Commission is hosting a Conference in Brussels on heating and cooling on 26-27 February this year. "The Conference will comprehensively explore the heating and cooling sector, including its role in achieving the EU's climate and energy objectives." 

CELSIUS will participate in the "Technology challenge" workshop, which will explore the technology landscape for heating and cooling. With focus on increasing the efficiency of heating and cooling solutions and accelerate market deployment, the session will also discuss the current technological solutions as well as looking at the barriers facing the sector and the possible instruments and solutions needed to overcome them.

The other workshops offered are "Heating and cooling: a vision for 2050," "Heating and cooling for industry," "Financing for heating and cooling," "Heating and cooling for Buildings," and "Building heat markets."

Last day to register is on 20 February, 2015.

Demonstration Projects (Demonstrators)

CELSIUS takes a holistic approach to overcoming technical, social, political and economic barriers to market roll-out of heating and cooling systems through its delivery of 10 new innovative demonstrators and the operation of more than 20 existing demonstrators. Categorized into system integration, sustainable production, storage, end user and infrastructure, the demonstrators illustrate technical and deployment innovation as well as innovative approaches to financing and stakeholder engagement. 

Three of the new demonstrators are in operation today.  
 

Heat Exchangers in Cologne

In October 2013, the first CELSIUS demonstrator was inaugurated. It was the first of three installations for heat recovery from sewage in Cologne. The main components of the heat recovery system in Cologne are: heat exchangers, heat pumps, gas boiler and buffer. The heat exchangers are the core of the Cologne demonstrator because they are the new and innovative part of this technical solution.

There are two kinds of heat exchangers used in these demonstrators. In Porz-Wahn and Mϋlheim, the heat exchangers were actually installed in the bottom of the sewage pipe, whereas in Nippes, the sewage is diverted into an evaporator in the boiler room of one of the schools, and it is in this evaporator that the heat exchange and compression take place. The three demonstrators supply heat to six schools with a total floor space of 62 000 m2 and a total heat demand of 4 200 MWh per year.  
 

Heat Hub in Rotterdam

The Heat Hub in Rotterdam was inaugurated in April of 2014. The heat hub focuses on optimising the waste heat transportation network of Warmtebedrijf Rotterdam by buffering, heat balancing, using smart ICT and forecasting. It increases the total heat delivery of the waste heat network without requiring additional investments in a new heat transport infrastructure or in additional heat sources. The heat hub will reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Rotterdam by 6 430 tons per year. 

Waste heat is recovered from a waste incinerator in the Port of Rotterdam and transported to the City of Rotterdam. The plans have a thermal exit capacity of 105 MW and the transportation system is an integrated double pipeline of 26 kilometers, running from the waste incinerator to its connections into Rotterdam's existing district heating infrastructure. The heat hub is a physical structure placed at a strategic location between the waste heat transportation infrastructure and the district heating system.
 

District Heating to a Ship in Gothenburg Harbour

On December 1, 2014, the shipping Company Stena Line, the City of Gothenburg and the energy company Göteborg Energi connected the Stena Danica ship to the Gothenburg district heating network.

It is the first time a ship in regular service has been connected to a district heating system. The results are significantly lower carbon emissions and a more sustainable way to heat the ship as well as its engines whilst in the harbour. District heating now heats the ship when it is in harbour instead of having to use the ship's boiler. The connection will reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Gothenburg by nearly 500 tons per year.
