Welcome to the Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP) newsletter! This quarterly digest highlights the latest news, spotlights, and other announcements on global environmental education. The GEEP was launched by the United States Environmental Protection AgencyTaiwan Environmental Protection Administration, and North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) in 2014.

NAAEE 48th Annual Conference and Research Symposium
Join us in Lexington, Kentucky, U.S.! Register now for NAAEE's 2019 Conference and Research Symposium (October 15-19), one of the largest annual professional gatherings of environmental educators. This year's theme, "Educating for a Just and Sustainable Future," will bring together environmental education professionals from around the world to share their work, learn from each other, and find inspiration! Registration is open at naaee.org/conference.
Natural Start Alliance's Nature-Based Early Learning Conference
Register for the 2019 Natural Start Alliance annual conference in historic Manchester, New Hampshire, U.S. (July 31-August 3), to connect with an international community of nature-based early learning professionals. This is the nation’s largest professional event for teaching, administration, research, and advocacy in nature-based early learning. Dr. Peter Gray, Professor of Psychology at Boston University, will present the conference's keynote, Mother Nature's Pedagogy: How Children Educate Themselves Naturally Through Free Play and Exploration. 10th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC)
WEEC 2019, an international congress promoting education for the environment and sustainability, will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, November 3-7, with the theme of “Local Knowledge, Communication, and Global Connectivity.” All researchers, educators, students, decision-makers, NGOs, and others working with environmental or sustainability education are welcome! Young Reporters for the Environment Announces 2019 International Competition Winners
From upcycling to straw-free cities, the 2019 Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) winners are shining a light on pressing environmental issues around the world. A program of the Foundation for Environmental Education, YRE provides a platform for young people (ages 11-25) to research environmental issues and promote solutions through investigative reporting, photography, and video journalism. YRE recently announced the winners of the annual International YRE Competition, which recognizes the most inspiring and creative articles, photos, and videos selected among thousands of entries from YRE's National Competitions around the world. Check out the 2019 winners here!
Sharing Effective Practice
Spotlight on EE 30 Under 30: Pratikshya Paneru, Class of 2018
Pratikshya Paneru, EE 30 Under 30 Class of 2018, grew up in a remote, hilly village in Nepal, playing in the outdoors. Today, Pratikshya is sharing this childhood passion with others by putting forests back in the hands of communities in Nepal. Pratikshya works as an Assistant Forest Officer in Nepal’s Ministry of Forest and Environment. Her work focuses on mobilizing local communities for community and national forest management, wildlife conservation, and forestry by considering the needs and environmental values of local people. One of their priorities is handing over forest areas as community forests to local Forest User Groups, which has helped restore forests while promoting income generation and community development. 

In Pratikshya’s own words, “EE 30 Under 30 has been a great platform for me to network and learn from young environmental leaders from different corners of the world. Environmental education helps me to widen my horizon of knowledge, which I share with my staff and use to raise awareness with local communities. It has been one of our essential tools to address environmental issues and connect nature and people, hence I understand the importance of environmental education to develop attitudes and values, acquire knowledge and sensitivity toward the environment, and provide individuals, groups, and societies with an opportunity and the motivation to be actively involved in solving environmental problems.”  Read more about Pratikshya and her fellow EE 30 Under 30 alumni at naaee.org/ee30under30.
Building Climate-Ready Schools in Canada: Towards Identifying Good Practices in Climate Change Education

The Sustainability and Education Policy Network (SEPN) has published an evaluation of UNESCO’s global climate change education pilot program in Canada. The report, Getting Climate-Ready: A Guide for Schools on Climate Action, identifies effective practices of climate action in Canada's UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet), which connects schools across the world to promote quality education in pursuit of peace and sustainable development. The evaluation was accompanied by a second report featuring stories from ASPnet schools. View the two reports at the links below:

Resource Spotlights
NAEE Curriculum Guide on Environmental Education and the Sustainable Development Goals
The U.K.'s National Association for Environmental Education (NAEE) has recently published a series of curriculum guides for schools, including one titled Environmental Education and the Sustainable Development Goals. The report explores opportunities for primary and secondary school curricula to consider the Sustainable Development Goals, drawing on curriculum analysis and case studies from schools and NGOs. View this and NAEE's other recently published guides here.

How Change Happens: The Different Ways that Social Change Happens

In his latest book, Cass Sunstein (author of Nudge and founder of Harvard's Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy) explores how social change happens and why some social movements take off whereas others do not, drawing on theory and examples from behavioral economics, psychology, and other fields. Sunstein sheds light on the importance of behavior change and the role of social norms in driving change for a wide range of social and environmental issues. Learn more here.
