Meet the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge
(Maj Gen (ret) Scott Gray, Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez, Chris Corbin, & Kristi Fryhover)
In August, folks from the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge (CWVC) organization, consisting of Chris Corbin, former US Army Green Beret, and CWVC President Maj Gen (ret) Scott Gray, joined Camp Kotok in Maine for a long weekend of learning/sharing, economic discussions and, of course, fishing. They presented their “Mission and Purpose” to fellow “campers” resulting in some enthusiastic new supporters.
The Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge website says,
“Our mission is to partner with various Universities, medical professionals and institutions to help gather research on PTSD, TBI, and Orthotics & Prosthetics so we can better understand the difficulties faced by wounded or injured veterans daily.
“In addition, the challenges we organize instill confidence and pride in the veterans that participate, better enabling them to realize their full potential and continue to contribute to helping others.”
(Pictured here are Week 1 & Week 2 versions of Downeast Lakes Land Trust's David Montague & Nicole Nygren and Cumberland Advisors' Norm Dempsey & David Kotok. Who did it better?)
Scott and Chris also came to listen and attended a talk held with the Downeast Lakes Land Trust’s David Montague and Nicole Nygren about the milfoil plant’s danger to the freshwater ecosystems across the region. Milfoil is an invasive, weed-like plant species that can spread rapidly and suffocate native plants and crowd out native fish. It also interferes with swimming and boating activities and you can read more about invasive milfoil and how it’s affecting Maine waters here: https://downeastlakes.org/invasive-milfoil-in-big-lake/
Some of you may already know that the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge vets have been actively engaged in the restoration and planting of new coral around the Florida Keys so it may come as no surprise that dialogue was started to see if CWVC’s vets might use their diving skills to help mitigate milfoil. Chris Corbin is working a plan to support this “Challenge” and help Maine's natural environment in 2023!
