Phoenix Panhellenic to Celebrate Centennial Virtually
August 8, 2020

Phoenix Panhellenic has made the difficult decision to host the Centennial Celebration virtually on August 8th and move to the evening. The restrictions for social distancing in a ballroom and bringing together 390 people during this pandemic was not in the best interest of our guests.

The good news is you now have the ability watch live. The pre-show begins at 5PM. The pre-show includes a Journey Through History Video Show. The show begins at 5:30pm.

There is no cost to register and view the event from your home. Many were not able to get a ticket, so now you all can attend. Please register at: If you feel safe, we do encourage you to consider hosting viewing parties (10 or less) at members' individual homes. You can also bid on auction items from this site.

Judith Hardes Delta Zeta (pictured), is our Woman of Impact and she and the women from other sororities will be honored on the evening. We will also hear guest speaker, Dr. Mari Ann Callais and many other surprises.

We promise this is not a Zoom "meeting", it will be a show. A Panhellenic show you don't want to miss! Show your Delta Zeta pride and register at:

Hope to see you at Centennial Celebration. It will be amΔΖing!
Delta Zeta has played an important role in the 100 year history of Phoenix Panhellenic. The fourth Panhellenic President was Delta Zeta Rosalind "Birdie" Fowler Keen from 1923-24. Other DZ Presidents have been 1956 - 1957 Miss Joan Daniels (Mrs. Dovilla), 1975 - 1976  Marilyn Jackson, 1995 - 1996 Pat Wells and 2013 - 2014 Susan Norman.

Pictured is "Birdie" Keen who was also the Phoenix Alumnae Chapter President when our chapter was chartered in 1948.

 Alumnae Spotlight
Anna Kiley is a Delta Zeta Alumnae, wife, mother of 2 and teacher of High School Biology. She recently took on the role of Phoenix Panhellenic delegate for the Phoenix Alumnae chapter. She was initiated into our Pi Zeta Chapter at ASU in 2005. She now lives in Gilbert with husband and their 7 yr old daughter and 5 yr old son.

When asked what Delta Zeta means to her, she responds, "Delta Zeta means so very much to me. It means always having a family, no matter where life takes me. It means always aspiring to be my best self as a representation of our sisterhood. Delta Zeta during my collegiate years provided me with my lifelong best friends, cherished memories, unique experiences, and important lessons. Today, Delta Zeta continues to be part of my identity as a woman and the sisterhood I share with our alumnae inspires me to connect, to grow, and to celebrate." Her favorite movie is Dirty Dancing and she admits to seeing it about a hundred times. Maybe Anna can start a DZ dance group for us?

During her free time, Anna loves to go camping with family, kayak and hike, and spend time around any and all bodies of water. As a DZ alumnae, she loves learning from other women, challenging herself to give more of her time and efforts when she can, and to connect with her DZ sisters.
Since she was a very young child, Anna has always been enamored by orca whales. So her dream vacation is to take a sea kayaking retreat in Johnstone Straight, BC to kayak alongside orcas in their natural habitat. She would love to see our Phoenix Alumnae group grow and to reconnect with the joy of DZ sisterhood. Meet Anna at our next virtual happy hour or contact her if you want to join her at her home to watch the Centennial Celebration on August 8. Contact:
Phoenix Delta Zeta Alumnae has been holding several "virtual" happy hours to connect. If you have not received an email invitation to any of these contact Lee Ann Witt at:

Mark your calendars, the next virtual happy hour  is July 8th at 6:30 pm.
Delta Zeta Phoenix Alumnae Dues are Due for 2020
Even though we have only been able to meet virtually, we would still welcome your dues for the 2020 year. We still have to pay dues to National and to Phoenix Panhellenic and our scholarships for Phoenix Day School for the Deaf. Dues are still only $35. If you aren't sure if you paid this year, just contact treasurer at
Many of you had paid for our Turtles & Pearls Luncheon. If you would like a refund, please let Lorna know. Or, she can apply it to your dues for the 2020 year or to the 2021 Turtles and Pearls Luncheon that we all hope and pray we can hold next year.
We are still looking for someone to keep Mary Peterson's cat temporarily - until her home allows visitors. If you think you might be able to help out or just want more information, please call Lorna at 602-290-6475.

You can mail a check to our treasurer (made out to Delta Zeta) to: Lorna Green, 4723 E. Voltaire Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85032 or you can pay on line with any major credit card. Check it out at:

Our strategy for the year certainly took a dramatic turn with Covid-19 and we are rolling right along with the change. We have met a few newcomers to our virtual Happy Hours and welcome more to join the fun. We will be adding some fun activities and crazy themes so “zoom” on in! If you need assistance, please let us know and we will have someone walk you through Zoom….it’s not hard once you get started! And it is so much fun to “see” everyone.

Our next one is July 8th at 6:30 pm. A Zoom Invitation will be sent to all members
or send an email to
Lee Ann Witt, to get added to the invite.
Stay connected with Delta Zetas while staying healthy!
Phoenix Alumnae Philanthropy Report
The DZ Phoenix Alumnae chapter presented our first scholarship at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf at the very first high school graduation in 1983. The Delta Zeta Phoenix Alumnae/Claudia Edwards Hosking Memorial Scholarship is made possible by generous donations and fundraisers that are held throughout the year by our Alumnae as well as our collegiate chapter here at ASU. This year it was our honor to present the following scholarships to graduating PDSD students who are going on to higher education:
Brian Lynch $1,000, Natasha Hamilton $1,000, & Maria Garcia $500
Thank you and congratulations to all! Photo is of DZ scholarship presentation at the first graduation. L-r: Susan Norman, Pat Wells, graduate Tina Champion, Claudia Hosking and Marge Poe.

Need Furniture?
Our Pi Zeta chapter at ASU is doing some updating this summer and as a result, there are a few pieces of furniture that are for sale so we are offering them to the DZ alums first! All pieces were used by the girls less than two years (don't ask :-) except the upright piano. Piano is also for sale although not pictured. The end tables are about 27" squares. The couch is 7 ft. long and the rug is about 7'9" x 9'. The 2 chairs swivel - sorry, forgot to get a measurement but can get that for you, if you're interested in those. If you are interested in any pieces, please contact Lorna Green at 602-290-6475. Price? Best offer!
Phoenix Panhellenic Association

Judith Hardes is our DZ Woman of Impact at the Phoenix Panhellenic Centennial Celebration on August 8 2020. For those that don't know Judith: “I was a “depression kid”, but as family finances improved my mother instilled in me the importance of giving back. So now I can live a comfortable, economical life and share my resources with causes and organizations that matter to me-the arts, politics, education and feminist issues".

In 2018 she established the Judith Hardes Endowed Fund at Penn State to provide financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate women in Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies. "I know it is difficult for many people to comprehend, but when I graduated women could not buy a car, open a checking account or even make a major health decision without a man’s permission.

We’ve made significant progress since then, but we still have a way to go to protect and advance our rights." She also underwrites an annual scholarship at Alice Lloyd College in Kentucky and supports the Delta Zeta Foundation Scholarship Program and the AAUW Fund.

Judith is currently a board member of the The Phoenix Theatre Company and has a theatre on their campus named for her. She was acknowledged at the annual Arizona Citizens for the Arts banquet and awarded the AriZoni Max McQueen Distinguished Service Award. She also supports Theater Works, Prescott Center for the Arts, The Arizona Theater Company, Black Box Theater, Phoenix Art Museum as well as public television and radio.

In her sixty years in AZ, she's been active in the Democratic Party as an officer of both county and state organizations and women’s clubs and inducted into the State Party’s Hall of Fame.

She also supports many hands-on-non-profits that assist others less fortunate than we. It’s giving back.

What a truly generous Delta Zeta who certainly lives our creed, "To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, may I give graciously of what is mine"
