Our Pi Zeta Chapter at ASU is Fifteen
Yep, the world has not ended! Pi Zeta celebrates their 15th anniversary October 8, 2020. It’s hard to believe that 15 years ago, Delta Zeta started with 89 young women who led us through our first recruitment, making quota and achieving total. Our first preference party was held in the Chapter Room at Adelphi Commons, where girls and PNMs huddled close together (the rooms were very small!) to drop their rose into the well. Only two hours prior to party time a sprinkler head broke and we had to quash the spewing water with sandbags and clean the entire outside patio in our nice dresses! Our Founding Members recruited some wonderfully strong and active young women throughout the years with many becoming advisors to other Delta Zeta chapters in addition to Pi Zeta. With a dedicated alumnae group and House Corporation, we have mentored and guided our ASU chapter to be a strong, caring group of young women that will proudly carry on our Delta Zeta sisterhood.

Past National President-Debbie Raziano, and Kathy Heatherly National VP at the time.

Our November book is The Scent Keeper by Erica Bauermeister. Emmeline lives an enchanted childhood on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses. What he won't explain are the mysterious scents stored in the drawers that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them.

Truly Connected Networking Night this fall!
Phoenix Alumnae Chapter
Dear Delta Zeta Sisters,

October is such a wonderful month and full of exciting fall changes!  The air begins to cool, somewhere the leaves begin to change colors and we all look forward to the fantastic months of weather ahead.  October is also the month we celebrate Delta Zeta’s founding on October 24, 1902.

If only the six young founders could see us now.
  • Starting one chapter at Miami University has now grown to 170 collegiate chapters nationwide and over 200 alumnae chapters in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • Only 8% had a telephone in 1902 and they were NOT the smart phones that so many have today! By the way, the cost of a three-minute telephone call from Denver to New York City was $11.
  • Horse and buggy was the choice of transportation then – no Lyft or Uber!
  • The leading cause of death in the U.S. pneumonia, influenza, tuberculosis, heart disease, diarrhea and stroke. Today we can add the COVID-19.
  • Delta Zeta has 280,000+ alumnae and we are still growing!
Please join us Wednesday, October 21st, to virtually celebrate our Founder’s Day! Wear a little pink and green, add your badge and “zoom in” for a few surprises as we celebrate 118 years of sisterhood and friendship.
Lee Ann Witt,
President Delta Zeta Phoenix Alumnae Chapter

Our Pi Zeta Chapter at ASU News
Crazy times, crazy recruitments! Sororities across the nation are recruiting virtually from start to finish...even some bid days! And surprisingly, numbers are exceeding expectations and prior years’ recruitment numbers. ASU recruitment was virtual throughout the entire process. Potential New Members submitted short videos, in addition to their applications, for sororities to get to know them better. Over 1300+ PNMs signed up for ASU’s recruitment and ended with 1,006 signed bids. The first round, Open House, all PNMs gathered with their Rho Gam and recruitment group, to watch a video from each sorority before making their first round choices. The second round, Philanthropy, sororities met PNMs on zoom, shared their philanthropy video, and conversed in breakout rooms. This took place the weekend of August 28th.
Third round, aka Sisterhood Round, took place Labor Day weekend, with the same format as second round. Preference was held on Sunday and women shared their experiences about Delta Zeta while PNMs asked more questions in breakout rooms, and ending in their final farewells before placing their selections. Bid Day followed on Monday with virtual invitations, picking up sorority backpacks at the Greek Leadership Community Room, and then finally meeting their new sorority sisters in small groups of no more than 10 at various locations around Tempe – Delta Zeta masks provided! Quota was 76 and Delta Zeta welcomed in 81 New Members. It was a very successful and unique recruitment!
Chapters will continue to meet virtually throughout the semester and that includes New Member meetings and sisterhoods. It’s not exactly the experience we all had but our girls have risen above the challenge and are determined to make the best of it. Our newest members hail from California, Nevada, Utah, Washington, Illinois, Arkansas, Texas, North Carolina, Ohio, Nebraska, Michigan, Indiana, Colorado, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Florida and even Denmark!
ASU has asked the Greek Houses at the Greek Leadership Village to de-densify! Five or six Pi Zetas will move to another University owned facility allowing 3-4 rooms to remain vacant within the house. These rooms will be available to any girl in the house that feels she is in an unsafe position. For example, a girl's roommate becomes sick. While she is waiting for Covid test results, her roommate may move to one of these rooms. Girls that test positive for Covid are still being moved to a separate facility until they are well and have a negative Covid test.
Hopefully, this will help the girls feel safer as we all navigate a world with Covid!
Philanthropy Opportunity
As an optional philanthropy, Delta Zeta alumnae and collegians donate teddy bears and or other stuffed animals through Phoenix Panhellenic Assosciation for Mighty Change of Heart. Their main focus is supporting foster children and kinship children in Arizona any way they can. There are over 15,500 foster children currently in the system and more are added every day. And while there are many great foster parents out there providing loving homes for these children, State support and resources can often be limited. When a child enters the system, they often take very little if anything with them in terms of worldly possessions and relying on foster families to make up the difference, which can cause unnecessary financial strain. This is where A Mighty Change of Heart begins. The stuffed animals are given to these children within a bag filled with other items including clothing, books and probably their first possessions. Our 12 to 24 inch stuffed teddy bears or other animals are an important aspect of the bag they take to their new home. Please bring bears to our Holiday at the Park on December 5 or donate directly at:
