Demystifying Gem Stones with Samrat Kapur

February 19, 2019 meeting

Highlights of Sam’s talk – notes by Marilyn Gardiner
There are two main sources of gemstones: India & China. India is historically known for its skilled gemstone cutters, and their stones are charged by weight in carats. China excels in its technology to cut uniformly round stone beads (usually from inexpensive stones), and they charge by the strand.
Discussion about quality of stones, and grading.
Sam showed samples: tourmaline at $4000 and a strand for $30. The difference was that the high quality stones were pink with lots of light passing through, while the cheap ones were opaque and dull.
Discussion about using gemstones in your work to increase your customer base. A comparison was made between the cost of 1 Swarovski crystal and 1 good gemstone bead.
The examples talked about included a Russian who makes outstanding jewellery with rough stones, how to use tiny microcuts in your work, briolettes, about dyeing stones (agates are mostly dyed), and about stones that are heated and coated.
Sam showed several examples of the latest and hottest trend: a Silverite coating applied to many different stones, including citrine, labradorite, and more.
Visit Sam’s store in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Ancaster Gem Show

Friday, October 4 to Sunday, October 6

As many members know, the Ancaster Gem show invites the GRBS to attend to promote our group to show attendees.  We will have a table for volunteers to attend.  It’s a fun way to pass a morning or afternoon at a bead show.  (Wait –is there a non-fun way to attend a bead show??)
