October - Our Return from Kenya

Thank You for all of your prayers and support for us while we were in Africa.

Returning home from Kenya is always bittersweet. It seems as though just when we get comfortable there, it's time to return. We have to leave our friends, a beautiful country, and the ground-level work that we so desire to be involved in. However, there is work to be done here, too.

We were able to accomplish much while in Kenya. However, there were 3 very important things we were able to do while we were there.

Train our Pastor in Limuru : We worked through some doctrinal training, systematic theology, and church structure. The ongoing training will help him to train the other pastors so that they may take biblical guidelines and effectively follow them in their specific context. It will also help him to come alongside some church planting partners we are aligning with. Please continue to pray for us in this. Helping Kenyan pastors to rightly understand the Bible is a crucial step to overcoming the Biblical illiteracy and prosperity gospel that covers the country.
Work with Christlike Academy : We were shocked to see that the school has grown from 80 children in 2014, to 185 children in 2016. We met with the head teacher and discussed salaries, needs, and future plans. We have a lot here that we need God to come through on! The school is growing and we really need to keep up. You'll find out more about how you can help in future newsletters.
Meet the hardworking people of Blessed Hands Beadworks : In the slums near the school are a group of men and women who are HIV positive, and whose children are also struggling with the disease. Some of them attend the church in Limuru where they have received help in learning to make an income. Instead of letting the disease ruin their lives and the lives of their family, they are working hard to provide for themselves to purchase food and medicine by making beautiful beadwork. We brought some back with us and are working on how to continue to distribute these unique hand-crafted items.

Every time we are in Africa, we are amazed at what God is doing there.

The struggle for our pastors is daily and comes in so many ways. Though other churches are plenty, the gospel they preach promises a health and wealth gospel that we know isn't true. We are thankful that we have a God who doesn't sit idly by, but enters into these situations and works through the men He calls to make His name rightly known and understood.

We are also thankful that we serve a God who cares for those who are forgotten. The children in the Misiri slums are the ones who suffer greatly when their parents are sick, have abandoned them, or are stepping away from their responsibilities. Christlike Academy is able to provide two warm meals a day and an accredited education to these children who otherwise wouldn't have the chance. In fact, there are students here who are scoring in the top ranks of the region in schoolwork.

Our God also loves those who seem most unloveable. HIV is rampant in Kenya. It affects men, women, and children. Most of those infected either allow the disease to take over by giving up or, because they cannot afford medication, they pass away quickly leaving behind families. God is working through our Pastor in Kenya to help those infected in his area learn to have hope and to work to care for themselves.

Our God is so good and so mighty. There is nothing our God cannot do.
