New faces!

My Choice Matters is growing! To be able to respond to the demand across NSW we have brought on two new facilitators for Get More Skills workshops. Ann Murphy &  Ann Turner are our new welcome additions to the MCM family.

Ann has recently joined MCM as a facilitator having been involved in education for many years as a teacher/trainer in the UK, Egypt and now Australia. As a trained life coach and counsellor she is excited about supporting people as they make changes to engage in life as much as possible. Ann has always been an advocate for inclusion and believes our society is enriched by diversity so she is thrilled to be a part of the MCM team.

Ann is committed to helping people gain skills and knowledge to work towards making informed choices and taking greater control of their life.

Resources: Good Life Workbooks 2 and 3
Thinking about what a good life means to you can be daunting. That's why we've created three workbooks to help you get started!

The three resources explore:
  • What is a good life? What are your needs and dreams?
  • Do you have something to do, someone to love and something to look forward to?
  • What place does funding have in creating a good life?

Make your leadership matter this year!

As part of the My Leadership Matters program emerging leaders get to practice their leadership skills by undertaking a community change project. There have been some fantastic projects such as the Parramatta leaders forming Westmead Hospital Access Matters. The group was set up by Sarah McIntosh, Viji Dhayanathan, Kylie Scott, Hannen Abdullah and Mark Hoare. They did a number of field trips, identified access issues, then successfully campaigned their MPs to get their issues on the radar of the Parramatta Council Access Committee.

“Here's the photographic evidence of the first of many WHAM wins! The extended pavement and new railing mean I can now get to the button without falling into the garden. This sign at Westmead train station is another WHAM win! This is at the exit from Westmead train station, directing people to the safest route to the hospital. They are incorporating our ideas/concerns into the Westmead Precinct Redevelopment Project that is coming up”

 - Sarah McIntosh, WHAM Leader

Other leadership graduates have been travelling the state talking to emerging leaders about their experience and a number of our leaders are also running their own project with funding from the Run Projects grants initiative.

Check out some of these great links to see our leaders in action:

It's been incredibly busy in the My Choice Matters office with Round 4 of Run Projects applications closing last week. We're in the process of providing feedback to everybody who submitted applications so hold tight if you're waiting to hear from us.

The selection panel will sit at the end of March so by April we'll have a brand new set of people embarking on projects. How exciting!

If you missed out on applying for Round 4 then never fear, applications for Round 5 are closing on 15th of June so you've still got an opportunity to run your own project. If you'd like support and assistance to complete your application we will start providing this in one months time, so between now and then have a brainstorm and get thinking.

If you want some inspiration then check out our Facebook page each Wednesday. So far this year we've seen great projects like Adam's moving out of home resource  and Chris' trip to Japan to try the latest in robotic walking technology!

"So, 10 minutes after I initially meet a carer, I have to strip naked in front of them. In most situations somebody would really expect to be bought a drink prior to allowing someone else to see them naked!!" Lauren Hislop recounts in a personal story of choice and control on our blog.

close up of a woman smilingSarah Butler also gave us some great insight into the importance of education for all, in an interview at the end of January. Plus every week we share plenty of stories through our Facebook page so connect with us there.

We're keen for people with disability and their family members to get involved with sharing their stories so please get in touch with Annie on annie@mychoicematters.org.au or 1800 144 653.
