CWF Backyard Certification

On July 15, we were notified that Gerry's Garden had received Backyard Habitat Certification from The Canadian Wildlife Federation! As you can imagine, we are absolutely thrilled.

We will be installing the plaque in the garden in a highly visible place.

2016 Rivers Day - Creek to Creek

WHEN:  September 25, noon to 4 pm
WHERE: Harbourside Park, North Vancouver

Come join BeeFriendly, City of North Vancouver, North Shore Streamkeepers and numerous other North Shore organizations in celebrating Rivers Day. This event is now a Creek to Creek event being held on the waterfront from lower Mackay Creek to Mosquito Creek. This is a family event with lots of participation opportunities for the kids.
Our station will be at Harbourside Park on the waterfront! Best view in town!!!

Installing another Bench

Since the loss of the insect hotel, we have been mulling over what to put in the large circle. The large flat piece of wood had been burnt during the insect hotel fire and we wanted to replace it.  The donation of another bench to Gerry made it easy.  We hope to install the bench prior to the end of the fall. This new bench will provide another vista for visitors.

Honeysuckle Support

Two very large honeysuckle bushes have been pruned down to their roots. The wooden supports for these bushes had collapsed under the weight.  We have an opportunity to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. There are a number of wrought iron columns that we are hoping to rescue from a building that will be demolished in the spring.  We are no longer allowed to have any wooden structures in the garden so these columns meet that requirement. We'll keep you posted!

Thanks to a Friend

We have a number of friends who are landscapers and they are always ready, willing and able to provide us with their professional assistance.  Here's our friend, Scott, weedwhacking the lupine embankment.  We will be digging more holes and planting lupine seeds so that the embankment will provide more food for the bumble bees.  Big thanks to Scott, Lynne and Rod!!!

Bees on Flowers

A bumble bee on the sea holly.
A honey bee on the fire weed.  Some beekeepers will put their bee hives in a field of fire weed and the honey can then be called "Fire Weed Honey".

Lower Mainland Green Team

The Lower Mainland Green Team will be helping us on September 10! They will be helping prepare the garden for the fall. We're very grateful for their assistance.  They will also be providing their assistance to Loutet Farm.

Spirit Works had a booth at this year's Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver.  The bee boxes were there and available for purchase.
