India: Stop criminalization of peaceful protest by Irom Sharmila

On 27 January, FORUM-ASIA expressed grave concern in a press release and an open letter to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the re-arrest of Ms. Irom Sharmila Chanu on 24 January over the very same charges she had been cleared of by the local court and released hours prior. Ms. Sharmila has been on a hunger strike for over 14 years demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).

ANNI: Recommendations from the ICC-SCA Report

Following the new report from the International Coordinating Committee Sub-Committee on Accreditation (ICC-SCA), FORUM-ASIA urged the NHRIs under review as well as governments in the respective countries to take the review and recommendations seriously. A few days later, FORUM-ASIA also addressed an open letter to the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) to express concerns with the NHRCK’s lack of institutional compliance with the Paris Principles both in law and practice. 

ASEAN: Launch of Report on the Performance of ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism

On 8 December, FORUM-ASIA, in partnership with People's Empowerment Foundationlaunched its 2013 report on the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism entitled "Four Years on and Still Treading Water". The report was launched in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a few days later in collaboration with Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM).

Cambodia: Call for the Immediate Release and Acquittal of 11 Imprisoned Activists 

Laos: 2nd Anniversary of Sombath Somphone's enforced disappearance - still no answers

FORUM-ASIA, together with its members the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) and the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights (LICADHO), called on the Cambodian government to act in conformity with relevant international human rights standards and release 11 human rights activists who were wrongfully convicted for exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
On the second anniversary (15 December) of the enforced disappearance of Sombath Somphone, FORUM-ASIA along with 81 other organizations firmly condemned the Lao government’s ongoing refusal to provide any information regarding his fate or whereabouts and call on ASEAN member states and the AICHR to advocate for thorough investigations into all cases of enforced disappearances.

Sri Lanka: Call on the new government to end impunity and restore fundamental freedoms

International Criminal Court : 13th ASP in New York

On 20 January, FORUM-ASIA welcomed the successful conclusion to the 8th Presidential elections in Sri Lanka and voiced its hope to see change in the unfortunate cycle of violence in which the country has been mired for many decades.
FORUM-ASIA attended the 13th Conference of the States Parties to the Rome Statutes of the International Criminal Court. FORUM-ASIA called on states parties who will next year constitute two-thirds of the Council to support justice and accountability in all fora, including the UN Human Rights Council, and further urged states to support the findings of the OHCHR Investigation on Sri Lanka.
