Malaysia: A Test for the Independence of the Judiciary 

On 28 October, FORUM-ASIA urged the Malaysian judiciary to ensure a fair trial for opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, in the Appeal hearing against his conviction for sodomy under the Malaysian Penal Code. The legitimacy of the trial should be seen in the context of the government’s heightened crackdown on opposition politicians and government dissidents.

On 24 October, Adilur Rahman Khan, FORUM-ASIA Executive Committee member and Secretary of its member organisation Odhikar, was awarded the 2014 International Bar Association Human Rights Award

Leyla Yunus nominated
for Nobel Peace Prize


On 22 October, the Women Human Rights Defenders International Coalition announced that Azerbaijani human rights defender, Leyla Yunus had been nominated for the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize.

Thailand: Mining Company must withdraw threat of legal actions against community leaders 

On 28 October, FORUM-ASIA called for defamation charges to be dropped against community based human rights defenders who exposed alleged human rights abuses by Tungkum Limited (TKL) Company. The charges carry a maximum sentence of two-years imprisonment.

From 26 September to 5 October, the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net) and the Colombian NGO Dejusticia co-organized the 2nd People’s Forum on Human Rights and Business in Bogota, Colombia. Participants including FORUM ASIA addressed key corporate accountability challenges.

The need for a mechanism to follow up on ICC-SCA's recommandations

On 31 October, FORUM-ASIA addressed an open letter on behalf of ANNI to the Chairperson of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) Sub-Committee on Accreditation (ICC-SCA) to further call on its members to establish a mechanism to track and follow-up on NHRIs’ implementation of the ICC-SCA’s recommendations.

On 3 November, FORUM-ASIA addressed an open letter on behalf of ANNI to the President of Taiwan to express concerns over the undue delays for the establishment of an independent National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in Taiwan, and reiterate the importance of such an independent body for the effective monitoring and implementation of the human rights obligations to which the state is party.

Sri Lanka Must End Attacks Against Human Rights Defenders

On 6 October, FORUM-ASIA and the International Service for Human Rights submitted a briefing paper to the UN Human Rights Committee in which it documented over twenty cases where Sri Lankan human rights defenders had been attacked by State and non-State actors in connection with their efforts to promote human rights and accountability.
