2014-2015 Wrap-Up

In this issue of Accent you will find a review of the 2014-2015 academic year, which included many student and faculty performances, visits from world renowned musicians, and change as we said goodbye to our Director of Bands, Dr. Jack Stamp. Student Accomplishments

Kenken Coronado (trumpet), Michael Garbett (percussion), Sarah Hetrick (saxophone), Eileen Kane (horn), and Marjorie Parish (clarinet) will be counselors for Interlochen Summer Arts Camp.

Destinee DiMino (trombone) completed her basic training for the PA National Guard Band.

Richard Firestone (saxophone) won the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition and performed Jacques Ibert’s Concertino da Camera for Saxophone and Orchestra with the orchestra in April.

Sarah Hetrick (saxophone) won the Butler Symphony Young Artist Competition and performed Tableaux de Provence by Paule Maurice with the orchestra in April.

Hsin-Jou Lee (piano) was accepted into the Gijon International Piano Festival to be held in Gijon, Spain in August 2015. She will participate in master-classes and lessons given by piano faculty from the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Penn State University and other top music schools.

Eileen Kane (horn) advanced to the final round in the MTNA National Young Artist Solo Competition and competed as a finalist in March 2015 in Las Vegas, NV. She was also a finalist in the Butler Symphony Young Artist Competition and was appointed to the horn section of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony (PYSO). 

Eileen Kane, Alex Swackhamer and Nick Umstead performed in a master-class for Mark Houghton, the third horn of the PSO.

MaryKate Kuhne (clarinet) was a finalist in the Butler Symphony Young Artist Competition.

Steven Moon (cello) was a finalist in IUP's Fulbright Fellowship program. He will receive a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education. 

Adam Myers (trombone) performed as a member of the Pittsburgh Youth Orchestra for the 2014-15 season. 

Senia Phillips (trombone) was accepted into the US Marine Band training program. 

Lexie Sobolewski (horn), Alex Swackammer (horn), Anna Very (voice), and Jessica Zelenack (voice) were hired for Summer 2015 employment at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan.

The clarinet studio performed as volunteers for the St. Andrews Memory Care Unit on April 21st.

The IUP Horn Choir performed at the Northeast Horn Workshop at Penn State in January of 2015.

The IUP Tubaphonium Ensemble performed an invited concert at the 2015 Northeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference in April.

Stamp Retirement

After a 25-year IUP career, Dr. Jack Stamp retired at the end of the Spring 2015 semester. The Department of Music celebrated his career with a series of concerts on April 24-26. In his final concert with the IUP Wind Ensemble, Dr. Stamp presented a program featuring world premiere performances of works by Anthony O’Toole, Molly Joyce, Carl Holmquist, and Daniel French. A highlight of the concert was the world premiere of “A Jack Stamp Suite,” with movements contributed by composers Bruce Yurko, Mark Camphouse, Timothy Mahr, Timothy Broege, and Andrew Boysen Jr. The Keystone Wind Ensemble, comprised of IUP faculty and alumni, performed a concert of several of Dr. Stamp's favorite works from the wind band literature. Several of our students will be going on to continue their studies in graduate programs.

Julie Allen (bassoon) has been awarded a graduate assistantship to attend the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee to earn a Master of Music in bassoon performance.

Rebecca Anthony (oboe) has been awarded a full assistantship and will begin a Master of Music in oboe performance degree at the the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Andi Bragiel (bassoon) has been awarded a graduate assistantship to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to earn a Master of Music in bassoon performance.

Richard Firestone (saxophone) will begin a Master of Music in saxophone performance at the University of Georgia.

Emily Kuhn (bassoon/clarinet) was offered a graduate assistantship to attend Ohio University to earn a Master of Music in multiple woodwind performance.

Nathaniel Lease (trombone) was accepted into the Master of Music program at the University of Delaware and will be a graduate teaching assistant.

Justin Mathis (saxophone) will begin a Master of Music in jazz performance at the University of Northern Colorado.

Steven Moon (cello) was accepted with a fellowship to the Ph.D. program in Ethnomusicology at the University of Pittsburgh.

IUP Choirs Sing Beethoven

The IUP Vocal Arts Area combined forces with the Altoona Symphony Orchestra and the Blair Concert Chorale to perform Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on Saturday, April 11, 2015.

Nearly 200 members of the IUP community, including students, faculty, alumni, and community members, presented a stellar performance of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 to an audience of over 1,000 at Calvary Baptist Church in Altoona. Director of Choral Studies Ryan Beeken, in collaboration with Jon Erik Schreiber and the Indiana Community Choir, prepared the IUP Chorale and Chorus and the Blair Concert Chorale of Altoona, totaling 180 voices, for the performance. Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

After being snowed out in their attempt at a February concert, the PSO returned to IUP in April to perform a concert that included Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake," a suite from Dvorak’s opera "Rusalka," and Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 6."  Prior to the concert, Maestro Manfred Honeck participated in a Q&A session moderated by Dr. Jack Stamp. Dr. Collins Given Distinguished Faculty Award

Dr. Zach Collins was one of four recipients of the University Senate Distinguished Faculty Award. Since 1969, IUP has presented these awards to honor faculty members who make significant contributions to the university. Follow this link to read more about the award.
