The digital newsletter of the IUP Department of Music

Welcome to the first issue of Accent, the digital newsletter of the IUP Department of Music.  The purpose of this e-newsletter is to keep alumni and friends of the department informed of music department news and upcoming events.  Don't fear - there are no plans to discontinue our annual printed newsletter, Notes.  In fact, Notes should be hitting your mailboxes in about a month.  Accent is simply a way for us to give you the latest information about the Department of Music.

Ronald G. Pogorzelski and Lester D. Yankee Memorial Organ

The IUP Department of Music is pleased to announce the installation of the Ronald G. Pogorzelski and Lester D. Yankee Memorial Organ, leased to the Indiana University of Pennsylvania by the American Guild of Organists.

On May 12, the installation process began for the Ronald G. Pogorzelski and Lester D. Yankee Memorial Organ in the large instrumental rehearsal room in Cogswell Hall. After being carefully stored in a facility in Lancaster County, the reconstruction and reassembling of parts began in early 2014. The IUP installation process spanned over a month of work which was completed by the original organ builder, Raymond J. Brunner of Raymond J. Brunner and Co., Silver Spring, PA.

Cogswell Hall is the new home of this two manual (two keyboards), mechanical action organ which comes to the university via a special, renewable lease from the American Guild of Organists. The pipe organ is a bequest to the Guild from its original owners, Ronald G. Pogorzelski and Lester D. Yankee, formerly of Bucks County, PA; it is valued at $400,000. The organ casework is gilded in 22-karat gold leaf, inspired by the early Pennsylvania German organists of David Tannenberg (1728-1804). Tannenberg was the most famous apprentice of Johann Gottlob Clemm, who established the rich, early 18th-century Pennsylvania organ building tradition.

For his return, he will perform with well-known vocalist Vanessa Thomas and a band that will include some of IUP’s most heralded alumni and faculty musicians.

A Grammy award winner, Doc has made more than 30 albums—from big band to jazz-fusion to classical. Doc’s flair for outrageous fashion and his trademark wit have never interfered with the fact that he is one of the greatest trumpeters and musicians of the last 60 years and respected in the worlds of classical music, jazz, big band, and now even world music.

Upcoming Festivals

The IUP Department of Music will be hosting several festivals this academic year.  Please share this information with any young musicians that you think might be interested.

This will be a one-day, sight-reading ensemble featuring an evening performance in Fisher Auditorium, master classes by IUP faculty, and the opportunity to work with Susan Creasap from Morehead State University.  All students in grades 7–9 who apply for this ensemble with a recommendation from their home director will be accepted to participate.  No audition is required!

IUP Senior High Band Invitational

Crimson Hawks Cavalcade of Choirs
May 1, 2015

The IUP Choral Area is excited to host the second annual Crimson Hawk Cavalcade of Choirs on May 1, 2015! At the Cavalcade of Choirs, each ensemble will have the opportunity to perform for other high school singers in a noncompetitive format.  Ensembles will sing in IUP's beautiful Fisher Auditorium and be professionally recorded. In addition, choirs will be provided written and verbal feedback from IUP faculty and distinguished guests, Dr. Derrick Fox of Ithaca College and Marko Vatovec from the University of Ljubljana Academy of Music in Slovenia. Each choir will receive direct instruction via an on-stage clinic.
