June Field Notes

Dear BeetBox supporter,

It has been some time since we sent news your way.  As much as we want to share everything that we're up to, growing vegetables demands a lot of our attention.

Thanks for sticking around.

And the vegetables are growing!  So we're doing some things right :)

A Cold, Wet Spring

You’ve probably heard of the news that our cold, wet spring has delayed field work and planting for farms of all shapes and sizes.

Compared to farmers in the Midwest, and our neighbours along the Ottawa River, who have faced severe flooding we are coming out of this relatively unscathed.  But the weather has set us back.

We love living and farming beside the river, but it did mean the fields were quite soggy this spring.  Just have a look at this photo a friend took with his drone around the time when the river hit its peak levels.  It's quite something.

A Delayed Start

During the month of May, the vegetable fields were inaccessible with the combination of a high water table, heavy rains, cold weather, and a lack of sunshine.

All told, this has delayed our production by about two weeks. This just means that we've pushed the start date of the boxes back by one week in order to catch up.

But our valued CSA members will still get to enjoy the full 18-week program as we push back the end date by a week.

CSA Members Mean the World to Us

This spring has been tough for many farms in our region.  For us, the consequences are lessened thanks to our supportive community of eaters who make up our CSA membership.  In times like these, we rely on them for their understanding, patience, and belief that we will make it right.
We would be in a very different situation if we didn’t have the hundreds of people who are standing behind us no matter what.  These people are in it to support local farmers and for that we are ever so grateful.

Harvest Begins July 2nd!

The first boxes will be distributed this coming Tuesday and Thursday.

But, there's still time to become a member and get over 35 different organic vegetables from July to October!

Just look at last year's July harvest.
Are you salivating?  I should have warned you.  We're so close to harvesting these high quality organic vegetables!

So much more to say...

There's a lot more news to share but we'll save it for another email.  Soon you get to know our new seasonal farmers: Ben, Liam, Val, and Coco the Dog (pictured above).  In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch!
