January is a time when many cruise ships set sail on their World Cruises.  On 4 January 1975 the QE2 set sail from Southampton on her Maiden World Cruise.  She travelled 32,422 miles in 92 days calling at 28 ports, including many maiden ports of call.

Fares ranged from USD: $6,500 - $20,400 ($86,240 top fare for suite) GBP: £2,070 - £8,510

During her service life QE2 completed 25 full World Cruises and  ten ‘extended’ voyages.

World Cruise dates, are listed on "QE2 Service Life" topics for World and extended cruises in the 1970's; 1980's, 1990's and 2000's

Building a Queen!

Construction of QE2 at John Brown's Shipyard, Clydebank
Ticket Sales:

14 January was an exciting day for the conference organisers as we saw half the conference tickets sold in the first 24 hours and we are pleased to announce that tickets are continuing to sell well.  The Clydebank Post reported on the successful initial sale of tickets and echoed our call for people from Clydebank (Bankies), especially those who had worked on the building of QE2, to attend the conference.

If you are thinking of coming to the conference we would advise you to purchase your ticket soon.

What you need to know:

  • Tickets are on sale on the Ticket page of QE2 Event website
  • Tickets are purchased through an online system that will ensure a trouble free process for the purchaser and the organisers
  • Payment will be made through Paypal, but you do not need to register for Paypal you can purchase as a guest
  • E-tickets will be issued that you can print out, or file on your "smart" phone so as to gain access to the conference, on 22 September
  • Accommodation - Information on preferential hotel rates can be found on the Event website Accommodation page.  There is also a Forum topic discussing  Hotels near the event
Forum members' Saturday 23 September get together: In response to a members question "would be possible to visit the Titan Crane?" Rob has investigated the option of a boat trip down the River Clyde, from the Riverside Museum, Glasgow to Clydebank, with a visit to the Titan crane and the return boat trip back to Glasgow. We need at least 100 people to be interested in this option, to go ahead with the booking of this unique trip.  Keep watching for more information!

We would like to encourage more people to support the Photo Competition, which generates so many lovely photos of QE2.

Considering the number of forum members, there  is only a small proportion of the membership who vote. We would like to thank everyone who supports the competition but if you have not voted before please participate and vote.

Voting for the December Photo Competition "Night Time on QE2"closes on 1 February 2017

November photo competition winner was Hamburger's photo "Like Sunset" The runner up was Cunarder Man's picture "Alone at Sunset"

Desktop Calendar:

We are sure that forum members have enjoyed the option to download a desktop, wallpaper monthly calendar.

As Alan Snelson can no longer do this work for us, we are looking for a volunteer to take over this role.    Alan has offered to work with whoever takes over, to ensure a smooth transition. If you can help please contact us at admin@theqe2story.com

We appreciate the work that Alan put into preparing the desktop calendar each month and we would like to thank him for his contribution.

January Photo Competition: QE2's Queens Room

Photo: Cunardqueen

This month's theme is "QE2 Queen's Room", chosen by Cunarder Man, the winner of the October competition.

We are sure you will be spoilt for choice picking your 3 entries for this month's competition. The design of the Queen's Room over the decades, the decor of the room, the activities enjoyed there (e.g. afternoon tea, performances, formal receptions and drinks, gala balls), the passengers enjoying them, the crew making them possible... and so much more!

The prize this month is the book QE2 Queen Elizabeth 2, the Authorised Story by Neil Potter and Jack Frost, donated by Isabelle Prondzynski :

Have a look at the Photo Competition instructions and upload three of your best photos that fit this theme. You can also see information about the prize(s).

Deadline for this month's competition is 31 January so there is still time to look for your best 3 photos and upload them to the competition album

Looking forward to seeing some amazing pictures!
