Hello

As 2020 comes to a close many of us will reflect on the effect that Covid-19 has had on our lives and the worldwide economy.  At the beginning of the year we could never have imagined how coronavirus would impact on our freedom to travel and that cruise and airline companies would cease operations when Governments brought in regulations, to control the virus.  As of this month 1.66 million people, diagnosed with Covid-19 have died worldwide and our thoughts go to anyone who has been affected in anyway.

During the early stages of the first lockdown, introducing Zoom meeting get togethers for forum members helped to lift our spirits. Throughout the year, the memory of QE2 has been kept alive by the contributions posted on the many topics and hopefully this has helped people get through this difficult year.

If you log into the forum you can read what others are doing over Christmas and New Year, in the Christmas/Festive 2020 and New Year 2021 topic.  Log in and let us know what you are planning for Christmas 2020.

Best wishes for 2021

The Impact of Coronavirus on the Shipping Industry

It was in January that Rob Lightbody had the foresight to start a topic that would record the impact of Covid_19 on the shipping industry.  Posts from forum members kept us informed about the operational and financial impact of Coronavirus on the cruise industry and it’s passengers in 2020.  Passengers being quarantined, ports refusing cruise ships to dock, share prices tumbling, cruise itineraries paused, shipping companies going into administration and concern for ships' crew.  More recent posts discuss passenger health and safety implications when the cruising industry restarts operations.

There were some good news stories as we learned that food onboard ships was donated to local food banks and then to repay this kind gesture, leading up to Christmas community projects have organised Christmas hampers for crew that are still onboard ship, which is welcome news.

The topic Coronavirus: General Discussion focus on the impact of the cruise industry  is one we will refer to and remember for a long time.  As will the topics Ships being sold, orders cancelled, ships scrapped due to Covid 19 and Covid-19: Laid up ships 6+ months on ...maintenance etc.

Ian Johnston's profile drawings of QE2

Ian Johnston, a QE2 Story 50 year conference speaker and author of books, such as Ships for a Nation (the history of John Brown's Shipyard) and co-author with Bruce Peter and Philip Dawson of the excellent book "QE2 Britain’s Greatest Liner” gave us permission to use his QE2 profile drawings, which would be of interest to our forum members and guests.
