The Questions You Can’t Answer

Your mother lives several hours away, but you and your family try to visit her several times each year. But this time, what started as a typical visit, quickly introduces you to a whole new world of responsibilities and decisions.

While eating out at her favorite restaurant, your mother complains of a sudden headache and then collapses.

You call 9-1-1 and the medics arrive promptly. That’s when the questions begin.

“Has this ever happened before?”
“What medications and supplements does your mother take? How often? What is the dosage?”

Resource of the Month

Looking for a book written by another caregiver, not just an “expert”? Consider Home-Based Eldercare: Stories and Strategies for Caregivers. Whether you are presently caring for a loved one at home or from a distance, or are just wanting to be prepared for that eventuality, this book covers the bases. Written in a warm, engaging style, it includes tips for the physical, emotional, and spiritual care of elders. It includes special chapters for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Legal and financial issues are addressed. Four appendices enrich the book. Available in print or in several downloadable formats. Don’t miss this one!

Quick Tip

Many seniors suffer from dehydration which leads to falls, constipation, and other medical issues. If your loved one resists drinking water (the best choice), try serving fruit juice, lemonade, or water-rich fruits such as watermelon.

For Reflection

"A test of a people is how it behaves toward the old. It is easy to love children. Even tyrants and dictators make a point of being fond of children. But the affection and care for the old, the incurable, the helpless are the true gold mines of a culture."

- Abraham J. Heschel

Memory Verse of the Month

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

- Psalm 139:16
