Greetings from YCA- the Yunus Center at the Asian Institute of Technology

How can businesses eradicate poverty or contribute to sustainable development? YCA believes that enterprise-led development approaches such as Social Business promoted by Muhammad Yunus provide possible answers. We provide an enabling platform that works to build capacity for Social Business and help accelerate social transformation in Thailand and beyond.

In this special edition, we feature 3 events happening on March 15th or with a registration or submission deadline on March 15th.

Conference on Leadership, Learning and Social enterprises in Asia, July 25-27th in AIT

The 4th Conference of ELLTA, which stands for Exploring Leadership and Learning Theories in Asia, will be hosted by AIT, from 25th to 27th July.  This year’s theme of “Leadership, Learning and Social Enterprise” reflect areas of high international interest and evolving debate.  With its focus on Asia, the conference emphasizes the importance of the themes for some of the world’s rising economies.

Special track on Enterprise-led Development, Social Business and Transformation
How can enterprises be drivers of change and solve global and local problems? How can development theories be adapted to enterprise-driven business models in Asia? Are concepts such as sustainable development, capacity building, social business and transformation also western? How can these concepts be interpret in the Asian context? Are social enterprises and businesses the right solutions for problems in Asia?

AIT Extension and YCA will showcase their grasp of the current issues under debate within the Social Enterprise and Social Innovation discussion, it's strengthening in-country linkages in Thailand through the Thailand Social Business Initiative (TSBI), and its collaborations within the expanding network of Yunus Social Business Centers in the Asia-Pacific (YSBC-AP), which now includes 20 universities and organizations.

Being asked to lead in coordinating the Enterprise-led Development, Social Business and Transformation track of the conference is a recognition of YCA’s ability to leverage knowledge resources and expertise within the social innovation ecosystem within Thailand and beyond.  AIT Extension will especially foreground this track.

YY Cocktail#9: Reaching Zero Waste through Social Business.

March 15th, 18.00-21.00 at The HOME BKK (BTS Asok/ MRT Sukhumvit)

Waste is a growing problem in Bangkok— Nearly 10,000 tons of waste ends up in landfills every day. Over 90% of our wastes can be reused or recycled, if it is handled properly, but close to 80% currently goes to landfills. Our next YY Cocktail will look at the business opportunity presented by diverting waste from landfills, as well as ways in which social businesses can help close the loop.

Trans-Siberian Journey of Discovery - Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship

This 18-day transcontinental journey will bring a select group of up to 20 co-travelers together to explore, examine, and enrich perspectives on social innovation and entrepreneurship across 6,000 kilometers of some of the most diverse communities along the fabled Trans-Siberian Railway.

Starting in St Petersburg and continuing on to Moscow, stopping in a tiny village around Ekaterinburg, getting close to the Urals all the way to Lake Baikal, crossing through the steppes of Mongolia, to culminate in the third country of our journey, China. The journey will be punctuated by stopovers filled with unique opportunities to observe social innovation at work, visit community enterprises, engage with entrepreneurs, share experiences, and imbibe local wisdom first-hand. Time on the train will be packed with group discussions, mini-workshops on a range of topics, storytelling, and plenty of time for introspection, reading, reflective writing and an evolving menu of self-directed immersion or peer-learning activities.

The highlight of the journey will be the Synthesis Session in Beijing, with travelers presenting summaries of their reflections, sharing select entries of their field diaries and a critique of the experience, as a gift to those who follow in succeeding YCA Journey of Discovery programs

This co-learning is unique that everyone will be a learner and a teacher at the same time. While there is a learning framework to follow, every co-traveler would have an opportunity to offer a learning session to the others on a topic of their choice.

We learn the most when we leave our comfort zone, discover new things, explore new landscapes and cultures, and work and travel together with other innovative minds.

We propose two dates in our pre-registration short form: August, or end August- early September.

How much?
The tentative price for this 18-day life changing experience is up to 4000 USD. However,  we are working hard with local partners to reduce costs and break the barriers for enthusiastic people who might not be able to join otherwise. Stressing that this course is designed like a social business, to cover its costs and operations and making no dividend or personal profit for anyone.

If this is interesting and you’d like to keep receive more detailed information, just fill this quick pre-registration form that will provide the new updates, details and the final registration form.
