Planning for SMSC and PSHE for Spring 2022?
We are happy to bring you a wide range of inspiring and helpful FREE resources to support SMSC education in the Spring Term. In this edition we have highlighted the importance of learning how we can all work together to create a better world where we stand more united. World Religion Day on the 16th of January, gives us a wonderful opportunity to do this. Staying safe online is increasingly important and we hope the resources for Safer Internet Day in February will help your pupils to do this. It’s Children’s Mental Health week in February too, and in this edition, you will find links to tools that promote wellbeing and encourage pupils to help each other grow. Staying with the topic of ‘Growth’, this is theme for British Science Week in March. There’s a poster competition, links to resources and perhaps seeds can be sown to inspire any budding scientists in your classroom to push forward with their dreams.

Spiritual: Celebrating World Religion Day (16th January) in school is a fantastic opportunity to encourage students to reflect upon different beliefs found around the globe. Why not spend time as a class to look at how the six main world religions are similar in their beliefs? By spending time discovering the similarities in the different faiths and understanding about other religions a little more, children will be better equipped to treat each other with respect and understanding and be more aware how we can all work together to create a better world where we stand more united. Moral: Acknowledging Safer Internet Day (8th February) in school are vital as more time is spent online, there is an even greater need to promote and teach safe, responsible and positive use of technology. Use Safer Internet Day as a way to teach and remind children how to stay safe on the internet. The internet can be a brilliant tool, but children need to be helped to learn what to look out for and what to do if they encounter something they aren’t sure about. Check out the BBC live lesson here to introduce the topic and open up discussions in the classroom.

Social: The theme for this year's Children’s Mental Health Week (7-13th February) is “Growing Together”. The last 2 years children (and even adults) have had many challenges and setbacks. Taking time in this week will allow the children in class to understand the importance of mental health and begin to provide them with tools to promote their wellbeing. This will also help to develop resilience and a positive attitude inside and outside the classroom. This year's theme encourages children to consider how they have grown and how they can help others to grow too. There are some amazing activities you can find here which can be used for the classroom and an assembly to use with the whole school.

Cultural: British Science week (11th-20th March) is a 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths. The theme for this year is “Growth”. Why not plant seeds inside or outside of the classroom; or look at the growth of the children in the year? It would be really amazing if your class took part in the British science week poster competition, click here for more information on this year's theme, Growth. Alternatively, you could use this week as an opportunity to change the children’s preconceived ideas of what a scientist is like. Here you can find amazing resources you will find useful which has some great inspirational stories about everyday scientists, eventually changing narrative of a "typical" scientist.
