 #growTECHFEST2022
Thank You for Attending!
growTECH FEST made the front page of the Chico ER!

On behalf of growTECH & Chicostart, thank you for choosing to attend growTECH FEST 2022. We hope you had fantastic experience! It was a great opportunity to learn about our entrepreneurial community in the North State, from those that have paved the way to new startups to student entrepreneurs of the future.

These four students, Lauren Keane with Couture with a Cure, Karl Godinez with Party Kup, Edward Perez with Big League Exchange, and Noah Ross with The PyraMED all did an amazing job pitching their business ideas and handling questions from investors. A big congrats to Lauren Keane winning the Student Lightning Round with her business idea geared toward women with disabilities, granting them clothing that is both functional and fashionable. Congratulations, Lauren!

The students knocked it out of the park and so did our fellow speakers — ICON Panel, Startup Stories, Keynote Speaker + guests!

Who thought our Keynote Speaker Crystal Washington was AMAZING?! We did! If you are wanting access to Crystal's slide presentation "The Future is Now", click HERE.

Winning Startup Stories idea went to Stefanie Olson with SheBuilds, a locally owned construction company with a different approach to home building. Congratulations, Stefanie.

Celebrating & Commemorating Indigenous People's Day, October 10
"...the recognition of our survival and, in many cases, resistance and even flourishing."

Last October, President Joe Biden signed the first presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples Day, a commemoration-turned-holiday that began in 1977 to honor Native American history and culture. That presidential stamp of approval was the most significant boost to date of efforts refocusing a federal holiday that for decades celebrated Christopher Columbus' discovery of America.

-USA Today, October 9, 2022

Although the day was still considered Columbus Day up to 1937, many people began calling it Indigenous Peoples’ Day to celebrate the rich culture and the lives of the Native American people.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrates, recognizes, and honors the beautiful traditions and cultures of the Indigenous People, not just in America, but around the world. Their way of life and culture carries wisdom and valuable insights into how we can live life more sustainably.

-National Today, October 10, 2022

Here in Chico, specifically, we would like to recognize the Mechoopda land that California State University, Chico is built upon. Today, approximately one-half of the old Chico Rancheria is now owned by California State University, Chico (CSUC). The 11-acre university-owned portion of the former reservation is used by CSUC's agriculture, anthropology, and archaeology students.

October is National Women's
Small Business Month!
October is National Women's Small Business Month celebrating the creative entrepreneurs who took the plunge to start a small business despite gender barriers. In 1972, women only owned 4.6% of all businesses in the United States. Now women own 42% of businesses in the United States.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama summarizes the importance of this demographic:

"No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens."

Women’s Small Business Month is an excellent opportunity to highlight the advancements made by women in business and celebrate women business owners. Here’s information to help you make the most of this important annual observation.
