PARENT/CAREGIVER EDUCATION: INSPIRING INTRINSIC MOTIVATION IN TEENS -- TUESDAY, JANUARY 12 (These Middle School Education Series events are organized by King Middle School and all BUSD Middle School Families are invited to join!)
BUSD Middle School Parent/Caregiver Education Series presents:
Inspiring Intrinsic Motivation in Teens
Presenters: William Stixrud, Ph. D. and Ned Johnson
This talk is about the incredible power with which intrinsic motivation can fuel the development of children and teens. Dr. Stixrud and Mr. Johnson will emphasize the important role that a sense of control – or autonomy – plays in helping children and teens develop healthy self-motivation, as well as high stress tolerance and resilience.
This is the main theme of their nationally best-selling book, The Self-Driven Child. They will discuss four kinds of motivational challenges that are commonly displayed by children and adolescents, and the focus will then shift to strategies that parents can use to help their children clarify what is important to them, set their own goals, and minimize the extent to which stress and insufficient sleep compromise their ability to sustain the effort necessary to accomplish their goals.
The Willard Update is the school's electronic newsletter, used for sending important messages from school administration and PTA to our community; the newsletters are prepared by a PTA parent volunteer (etree@willardmiddleschool.org).
