PRINCIPAL'S UPDATES: Willard Fund, BIPOC Family Meeting, Conferences, Title 1 Letter
Good Afternoon Willard Families,

As I listened to Vice President-Elect Harris speak to our youth, I could not help but be proud of the work we continue to do at Willard. The storyline: A student from our own Berkeley Unified School District, heading to the White House, a representation of both women and people of color, is an unbelievable moment that both uplifts and provides hope to the students we serve.

“But while I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last. Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities. And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourself in a way that others might not see you, simply because they’ve never seen it before.”

With that, here are some important updates as we head into the week

The Willard Fund: Willard’s PTA has launched this year’s Willard Fund fundraising initiative. By now, you should have received this letter. Please read and consider helping if you can, any and all support is appreciated.

Willard BIPOC Family Meeting: Willard will host a BIPOC family meeting on November 19th from 7:00 - 8:30pm . This event will be co-facilitated by both families and Willard staff who identify as BIPOC. Here are some additional details on this event.  If you would like to participate in this event, please sign up here.

Conferences on 11/18: Willard will hold drop-in conferences from 10:00 - 12:00pm, 1:00 - 3:00pm, and 4:30 - 6:30pm on 11/18.

  • 7th/8th grade: If you are a family member of a 7th/8th grade student then please use this document to sign up for conferences on November 18th.
  • 6th grade: If you are a family member of a 6th grade student, please be on the lookout for an email from your students advisory teacher at some point today. You will use a document that will look something like this to sign up for conferences.

Next Week’s Evening Events: In addition to next Thursday’s BIPOC family meeting, Willard will host a PTA General Meeting on Wednesday (11/18) at 6:30pm, and Willard will participate in BUSD’s Black Parent/Guardian Principal Learning Circles on Tuesday (11/17) from 6 - 8:00PM.

Title 1 Letter: This message serves as notification that Willard receives Title 1 funding. Please review this letter for more information.

If things come up, please remember, you can always reach out to your student’s grade level counselor, or contact myself.

Best,

Chris Albeck
Principal

GIFT CARDS FOR GROCERIES DRIVE
Dear Willard,
Some of our Willard families are food insecure and the impacts of the pandemic have exacerbated the needs of even more families. The Willard PTA is hosting a virtual food drive to help ensure that all families in our Willard community can put food on the table.  Please help us by purchasing gift certificates in small denominations (think $10, $25, $50) to local grocery stores such as Safeway, Berkeley Bowl, Whole Foods or your favorite place to shop for food.

Gift cards can be mailed to Willard Middle School ℅ Bryan Grau, Vice Principal, 2425 Stuart Street, Berkeley, CA 94705 or dropped in the Willard main office M-F 8:30-3 or e-cards can be emailed to bryangrau@berkeley.net.

The need is urgent so please don’t delay.
Thank you for your support!

Gratefully,
The Willard PTA

THE WILLARD LIBRARY IS CHECKING OUT BOOKS!
The Willard Library is circulating books -- check out this flyer. Students can submit their requests for books using this form (form requires that students be logged into their student (berkeley.net) accounts to access), and pickups are curbside at Willard on Wednesdays from 3:30-5 PM.  Due to the November 11th holiday there will be no book pickup day next week and the next library pickup is November 18th.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Berkeley Schools Volunteers (BSV) need library volunteers immediately!

Wonderfully, our district is moving into Phase 2: (REAL!) book circulation to elementary and middle school students!

This is how it works: librarians are checking out books to students on an ongoing basis (see announcement above to learn how the Willard Library is doing this). They bag and label the books themselves, then pass them once a week to a small volunteer team to distribute to families, curb-side.

To make this all fly, we need volunteers for just a few hours each week, by school. Some schools already have their systems set, but those below do not.

Are you (or someone you know) free any of the days/times below?

·       Sylvia Mendez:  Mondays, 3-5pm

·       Longfellow Middle:  Wednesdays, 3-5pm

·       Willard Middle:  Wednesdays, 3-5pm

·       John Muir:  Thursdays, 2-4pm

·       Rosa Parks:  Thursdays, 8-10am

·       Thousand Oaks:  Fridays, 3-6pm

*** Sign-up for weekly shifts HERE ***

We are also looking for Task Runners to deliver books to families that can't make it to the school during the book pick-up times. Here's the link to the Task Runner Registration Form to sign up to deliver books to students.
