PRINCIPAL'S UPDATES: MATERIALS DISTRIBUTION, MIDDLE SCHOOL SURVEY, TOWN HALL RECORDING, INFO NIGHT HELP NEEDED
December 7, 2020
Good Afternoon Willard Families,
Well, I woke up Saturday morning sore from participating in Mr. Griffin’s 7th grade PE class on Friday morning. Not sure if that speaks to the rigor of the class, or my own physical fitness 😂. Regardless, like our 7th grade PE students, Willard students continue to participate in engaging and thoughtfully planned lessons. From our English students being adequately prepared to write interpretative essays, to our 8th grade history students who are puting “Columbus on trial”, to our entire student community learning about the harmful effects of vaping during our Red Ribbon Week advisory lessons, Willard continues to make this a meaningful educational experience for our students. With that, we wouldn’t be able to make any of this happen without your support. We appreciate you, Willard community!
With that, here are some important updates as we head into the week:
Materials Distribution: Starting today, there will be new materials distributed outside the front gate of Willard at the Stuart Street entrance. Please note that your student’s teachers will inform you if there will be materials to pick up for their specific classes. Daily, 8:30am-3:30pm.
Middle School Family Survey: BUSD’s Board of Education has voted to approach reopening in a phased and deliberate manner, though no dates have yet been approved by the Board of Education for reopening middle and high schools. Although our county has moved into "purple" designation in which we are not permitted to reopen schools, we continue to prepare for changing conditions by developing reopening plans. As the district enters negotiations with labor partners, having your voices in the room is critical. Please take this Middle School Family Survey
Willard Middle School Information Night: I am looking for a group of current 6th grade families who would like to participate in a video recorded zoom conversation with me about your students' experience transitioning to, and being in middle school. This conversation will be uploaded to our school website for incoming families to watch. If you would like to participate in this, please sign up here.
End of Semester 1: Semester 1 and Quarter 2 come to an end next Friday, 12/18.
If things come up, please remember, you can always reach out to your student’s grade level counselor, or contact myself.
WILLARD LIBRARY NEWS: FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM & BOOK DONATIONS
Willard friends and family - follow the Willard library on Instagram!
Stay up to date on school and book news.
Follow the library @WillardLibraryInsta
Did you buy quite a few books when shelter-in-place first started and now your family has read them and you would like to donate them? If you have lightly used, high interest titles - the Willard library might want them! Ms. Stephens has found that during distance learning it is helpful to have way more copies of the same books than during in person school because the return time on books is much slower. If you have books lying around that you think Willard students would enjoy please email email@example.com.
DISTANCE LEARNING VOLUNTEERS MEETING -- TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8
Interested in volunteering at Willard? Have ideas for volunteer projects? Join us at the next Distance Learning Volunteer Committee (DLVC) Zoom meeting: Tuesday, December 8th at 7:30pm. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/8397662184

ASPIRE PARENT WORKSHOP -- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16
Is your child struggling, frustrated, or experiencing Zoom fatigue? Don’t throw in the towel! The ASPIRE Program is happy to provide a series of parent workshops throughout the 2020-2021 school year to discuss how to provide support to your teen during this unprecedented time. You will also get the opportunity to connect with other parents from your school and others in Alameda County.
The ASPIRE (Adolescent Services Providing Inspiration, Recovery & Education) program has provided services to Willard Middle School for more than five years. The program is funded through Alameda County Behavioral Healthcare Services. The goals of the program are to prevent and reduce substance use and to improve health and wellness and school performance of the students. Last year, 97.5% of Willard students receiving services reported it helped them understand the negative effects of drugs and alcohol. Additionally, 100% of faculty surveyed reported improvement among students who participated in the program, including overall attitude, behavior, and school performance.
The Willard Update is the school's electronic newsletter, used for sending important messages from school administration and PTA to our community; the newsletters are prepared by a PTA parent volunteer (email@example.com).
