DROP OFF APPRECIATION SIGNS FOR TEACHERS & STAFF BY APRIL 2 @ NOON
Dear Willard Families,
Very soon, many of our teachers will be back on campus. They have been working tirelessly over the past year to create the best possible virtual school experience for our students, and they deserve our gratitude. We are also grateful for dedicated Willard staff who have kept the the facilities running in preparation for when students and staff will return. To show our appreciation, the PTA has organized a sign/poster campaign.
Interested in participating? Here’s how:
Have your student or family create a sign(s)with a welcoming message reflecting sentiments such as: we love our teachers, our teachers rock, etc. and general thank you signs of appreciation to custodial staff, principals, etc.
Signs/posters can be any size.
Make it fun! Signs can be super simple or as elaborate as you wish.
Finished signs can be dropped off in designated boxes in front of Willard during the hours of 8:30am-3:00pm starting today.
SPORTS EQUIPMENT DONATIONS NEEDED
The Willard PE team is seeking donations of sports equipment that may be useful to share with students who will be remaining in full distance learning mode this Spring.
If you have basketballs, soccer balls, tennis balls, footballs, frisbees, or jump ropes in new or gently used shape to donate, these will be much appreciated and distributed by Willard staff to families who could use them.
Donation bins for this equipment can be found outside the Willard front gate on Stuart street -- please drop off there during normal materials distribution hours (Mon-Fri, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM).
Thank you community!
EXPLORATORIUM VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP, MONDAY, MARCH 29
Willard Goes to the Exploratorium
super-fun virtual field trip
Monday, March 29th
The Ambassadors invite all Willard students and families to the pandemic version of a sixth-grade tradition: our annual giant visit to the Exploratorium. This is no boring field trip—we’ll be making this as Exploratorium-ish an event as possible, with exhibit visits chosen to be almost like the real museum. All grades welcome.
Experiment with sound!
Explore art + color!

STORIES FOR CHANGE -- YOUNG ADULT AUTHOR SERIES
The Berkeley Public Library has been working with the Berkeley High School Library to develop a series of virtual author programs which could also be of interest to middle school families:
This Spring, Berkeley Public Library presents Stories for Change, an event series spotlighting some of today’s most exciting YA authors and stories that celebrate acceptance, understanding, and truth.
In these books you will meet a burgeoning brujo claiming his power by boldly being his true self; a mythical hero protecting the innocent against a very human evil; and an artist struggling to keep his voice in the wake of an unjust conviction. Read the books, join the conversation, and meet the authors!
Our first events are focus on Aiden Thomas’ Cemetery Boys. Yadriel is a gay trans boy looking for acceptance from his traditional Latinx family. That tradition involves acting as emissaries of Lady Death to help free souls trapped on Earth, a role that is held only by the men in his family. When Yadriel performs an initiation ceremony on his own and is granted the powers of a brujo by Lady Death herself, his chance to claim his role seems to be at hand! But when another brujo suddenly dies his family is thrown into turmoil, and the trouble only deepens when Yadriel finds himself bound to the spirit of a dead classmate, Julian. Yadriel must untangle the mystery of Julian’s death, expose the threat to the brujo community, save the world… and maybe fall in love with a ghost?
WILLARD FAMILY COMMUNITY GATHERING -- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31
The Willard PTA would like to offer our families a chance to connect as we prepare for the hybrid model coming up at Willard. We know some families will be sending their students back for the in-person offering, and some will choose to remain in full distance-learning mode. For all families, we want to invite you to join us at our next PTA gathering, on Wednesday, March 31 at 6:30 PM on Zoom (link below) to just reconnect and share what you and your students might be feeling about this next phase at Willard, and hopefully find support in community. Principal Albeck will also be joining us to provide the latest updates and answer questions.
