A few weeks ago my family and I hosted Enette Pauze.

Enette is an international speaker from Toronto Canada and was in New Zealand speaking with National Speakers Association New Zealand (NSANZ) and conducting facilitation and trainings for clients. Enette spoke in New Zealand in February at the Global Speakers Summit (GSS).

Enette has build a raft of strategies and IP around, among others, the family business model and the Table of 56. What is the Table of 56? I'll tease you there :-)

If we look at family businesses for a minute, we very often do not structure the roles or the parties very well nor do we categorize the wealth types here which family members introduce. The identification of wealth types is an eye opener in itself! The absence of structure and clarity on wealth inputs can lead to conflict, particularly when mixing business and blood behaviours and the emotions at play here.

Enette's research has designed seven strategies in this space and we were lucky enough to have an awesome 90 minute seminar from Enette here in Christchurch. Here Enette touched on the framework of each strategy.

If you are in Christchurch and would like to see this content which was recorded let me know as this can be screened with Enette's permission. Screenings would be at my office 208 Barbadoes St.

Enette is back in kiwi land in November and we look to stage an event in Christchurch at this time. In the meantime, Enette's web site link is below.

Forty interviews down. Sixty to go.

The photo above is me with Darren Pratley at Avalon Studios in Lower Hutt. I interviewed Darren at this time in addition to the awesome Pallas Hupe Cotter in the Heroes of Change series. A pilot of these interviews has been sent to TV1 and TV3 / Prime.

Why Heroes of Change?

If you are up to be part of the story too, let me know. coming soon.

Don't cry, here is a piece on Emotional Intelligence

What exactly is Emotional Intelligence? Knowing when you are crying?

(Not quite)

Emotional Intelligence (EI, also referred to as Emotional Quotient, EQ) is a term created by two researchers – Peter Salavoy and John Mayer – and popularized by Daniel Goleman in his seminal 1996 book of the same name (I have read this book myself and - although heavy in places - is a great start if you re curious in developing your knowledge base in EI).

We define EI as the ability to:
  • Recognize, understand and manage our own emotions, and
  • Recognize, understand and influence the emotions of others.
Increasingly research informs us that EI can outweigh other attributes of being an effective leader, such as technical skills or brute intellectuality.

Ever had an intellectually smart leader around you who put the team to sleep? Or a command and control type who thought empathy was a beauty treatment?

So what does this tell us?

EI will become more important in the hiring and selection of leaders as EI relates more to human factors of emotion that we all hold. This is an irrefutable construct of our human condition.

One EI attribute is self awareness. Do we appreciate self aware leaders who know themselves? Of course we do. Even showing vulnerability can paradoxically bring the team in and closer to the leader, sometimes.

What is a fantastic leading edge leadership case study in this space?

Hang on..

Did you hear that?

Someone else in Whitehouse just got fired :-)

I have decided to add EI assessment accreditation to my coaching / training toolbox and have selected Genos International for this. See attached link below for more information on this model, provided through Opra NZ Ltd. There is a training in Christchurch 25-26th October, let me know if you would like to join me here.
