December 2014

Hello <<First Name>>,

Happy Holidays to you! I hope your season is filled with tranquility amid the flurry.

Westminster Dog Show, 2015

It was a joy once again to do the art for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. I will be at the New York City show, February 16-17, 2015, dedicating and signing posters of my art. Please come see me! We have a lot of fun as dog lovers share their stories.

Last year's Best of Show was a magnificent Wire Fox Terrier named "Afterall Painting the Sky" (a.k.a. "Sky"). In honor of the esteemed Sky, I named my 2015 painting, which features her, "I'll Paint the Sky." Sky is at the center, on the Madison Square Garden floor, while her fellow champions grace the sky above.

THE PLAYERS Champion, Martin Kaymer, September 2014

Late summer 2014 found me happily drawing Martin Kaymer who won THE PLAYERS 2015 golf tournament. THE PLAYERS tournament, held at the beautiful Sawgrass Course in May, was exciting all the way to the finish. Every tournament is a story unfolding.

My portrait of Kaymer will hang in the Sawgrass clubhouse gallery in Ponte Vedra, Florida, among my portraits of all THE PLAYERS winners.

I am delighted to have a new gallery affiliation with the River Road Gallery in Wilton, CT, and look forward to working with owner Roslyn Strivzer and gallery manager Pat Blossom. Their enthusiasm for the art they show is inspiring. I love this little gallery. My paintings graced a gallery wall for the Christmas season.

It is fascinating to paint people at repose, reading. One gets a feeling for the present humor of a model when studying her in the solitude of a private space. The attitude of a painting definitely shifts, be the subject perusing homework, flipping through the latest issue of VOGUE, or focusing on a gripping novel. Just how much is my projection, versus her unique sensibility of the moment, is a mystery.  Painting people is relational.

Portrait of the Slaymakers, October 2014

Nancy Slaymaker and her Two Sons
"Nancy Slaymaker and her Two Sons," and featured stuffed animals.
This autumn, I painted Nancy Slaymaker with her two beautiful sons on the cusp of their move south. It felt nostalgic, even to me, to paint their New York home behind them. Time moves forward, life shifts.

This painting was fun to design with best beloved stuffed animals cuddled close. Their inclusion rallied enthusiasm for the project during our arduous modelling session in the early morning chill. (The artist wanted morning light!) It was right to immortalize the guys with their boon companions.

I wish you and your loved ones a very wonderful holiday week and the best life adventures for the new year!

As always, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to respond to this email, or email me directly at ChrisDuke@ChrisDukeArt.com.
