Dean's Message

Aloha,
As the Hawaiʻi healthcare delivery system redesigns itself, the role of the nurse and of nursing care is increasingly prominent. As part of our commitment to improving the health of people in Hawaiʻi, we are continuing our effort to transform nursing education.

Nurses are expected to deliver safe quality care while understanding the focus on minimizing hospitalization and building a community based care system. The nurse must appreciate the context for service delivery and recognize their responsibility to support the creation of sound health policy. This shift in care delivery requires that all nurses understand policy development, systems thinking, and the financial impacts of their contributions. Today, most nursing curriculums do not include this content. The UH Mānoa Nursing faculty have made decisions to revise curriculum and program for both undergraduate (BS) and graduate students effective in fall 2015. We believe these changes are necessary to ensure our graduates are prepared leaders and innovators in whatever setting they choose to contribute. Highlights of the changes include:

The Undergraduate (BS) Program:

  • We are returning to a fall only admission for BS students.
  • We are increasing the number of students admitted directly from high school to UH Mānoa Nursing.
  • We are continuing our progression partnership with the UH community colleges for the AD graduate to continue directly to their senior year as a UH Mānoa BS student.
  • With federal funds, we have launched the Vets-to-BSN Program to accelerate the time to the BS degree for experienced military medics and corpsmen.

The Graduate Programs:

  • We are increasing enrollment in the graduate entry to nursing (GEPN) program, formerly known as MEPN, in fall 2015.
  • We will continue to offer the MS clinical nurse specialist (CNS) and community health nursing specialties.
  • We are creating direct pathways from the BS to doctoral education.
  • The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program will admit post-BS graduates to the adult/gerontology and family nurse practitioner specialties effective in fall 2015 and the Nurse Executive Leadership specialty effective in fall 2016.
  • The PhD program will admit post-BS graduates in fall 2015.

We remain committed to our public university mission to provide Hawaiʻi with well educated and competent nurses. I ask that you join with us to celebrate the evolution of the nursing profession to keep pace with our changing healthcare industry.

Best wishes to you and your ʻohana for a joyful and healthy holiday season!
