DECEMBER 2014 – And herewith the SCA's Newsletter, erratically published and mildly interesting. It'll be an interesting 2015!  Happy New Year to everyone who makes Shoreditch so special!

RIVINGTON STREET – Hackney launched a 6 month trial of a pedestrian zone on Rivington St (trade-vehicle and taxis-only access). The SCA views this as a destructive scheme, likely to contribute to the severe night-time economy problems. If you experience issues  – increased noise, ASB, dealing, etc – email Andy Cunningham at Hackney Council (andy.cunningham@hackney.gov.uk) and copy the SCA.
BALLOONS - Residents have noticed an enormous increase in open nitrous balloon selling, often accompanied by Class A drugs. The good news is that the police have new powers to shut down this illegal and destructive street trade.  Read more about it HERE.
A “NEW” OLD STREET ROUNDABOUT? – The Mayor launched a scheme to radically revamp the icky Old Street roundabout.   The scheme would see a new plaza, part of the roundabout closed off and two-way traffic.  More details HERE.
LICENSE APPLICATIONS - 10+ licenses were rejected or curtailed this year following objections from neighbours. Yet still they come. 5 to consider (click to object; (deadlines strictly enforced): Hoxton Pony (104/108 Curtain Rad; 3am music and booze; deadline 15/01); Bamboobox (194 Shoreditch High St; 3am food; deadline 31/12); Zero Kebab (2 Kingsland Rd; 11pm booze in takeaway; deadline 5/1); Sutton and Sons (Unit 52, Boxpark; 10:30pm music & booze; deadline 06/01); and Street Diners (Land on SW of Great Eastern St, b/w Great Eastern St and Hewitt St; 11:30pm outdoor music & booze; deadline 15/01).
THE GOODSYARD – Much of the year was consumed by understanding the proposals for the Goodsyard, the site around Shoreditch High St station. The monstrous plans filed in the autumn have generated scores of objections to towers blighting this community. If you’re concerned we urge you to object as soon as possible HERE.
ART’OTEL – The proposals for the redevelopment of a new hotel at 84-86 Great Eastern St & 1-3 Rivington St, EC2A 3JL (the old Foundry) are online at http://www.artotelhoxtondevelopment.co.uk.  The proposal is an art-themed hotel with associated gallery, retail, office and leisure space.
...AND LOOKING BACK – What an astounding year for Shoreditch! They say the only constant is change. With the winds (gales?!) of change buffeting our community, there is so much to note from the year that was:

New hotels on the march (Ace, Great Eastern, Nobu, Gansevoort, Old Magistrates Court, Citizen M, Montcalm), sprouting quicker than Christaan Nagel mushrooms.

New retail and food continues to appear and flourish in the neighbourhood, with additions such as Elemental, Sister Ray, Goodhood, Bird filling in the gaps in the High Street and Curtain Road.

New residents and business has doubled the SCA's membership and followers. We've had productive collaboration with residents of the triangle, North of Old St, West of Great Eastern, and with our Tower Hamlets neighbours.  The SCA spent much of the year working with businesses (eg Hackney Pubwatch), the Met Police (special thanks to Guy Hicks and the licensing team) and Hackney Council (in particular regeneration).  All of this has lead to significant progress on some of the stickier planning and licensing issues.
