Board Updates

It has been a productive spring and summer – we recruited another Board member and are very grateful to have her join our team and lend her experience and skills to our initiative. Clare Sheerin has extensive experience in the energy sector specializing in communications, community relations and social investment. Within these fields she has received the President’s Award for Environmental Leadership from TransAlta Corp. as well as the Committee Award from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers for her work on the Slave Lake Recovery Project. She has also spent time volunteering with Big Brothers and Sisters, and most recently held the position of Chair of the Board for the Calgary Corporate Challenge.
We have also recruited our first employee and are very excited to have Kristin Pletch join the team and keep the momentum going on our initiatives. Kristin is a fundraising and accredited marketing communications professional, who transitioned to healthcare philanthropy in 2008 after nine years in private sector sales and marketing. As a former major gifts officer, she has successfully planned and executed all aspects of donor relationship development with a focus above all, on cultivating mutually-rewarding investment opportunities. As manager of marketing and communications for Hospice Calgary, she successfully led the 2012 re-branding of the organization, plus all day-to-day marketing communications initiatives. Kristin intimately understands what living with an eating disorder involves, and has previously been very involved at a board level in raising awareness and support for these devastating mental illnesses.

Family and Client Support

We continue to offer parent and client support groups. If you are interested in joining the next sessions, please let us know by email to Please see our website for all the specifics of these groups.

Community Engagement

Silver Linings has been getting involved in a number of community initiatives related to eating disorders:
  • We are now part of a Calgary-based round table, that includes Alberta Health Services, Access Mental Health, Calgary Counselling, and EDSNA (Eating Disorder Support Network of Alberta) among others. The mandate of this round table is to discuss existing services available to the Calgary eating disorder community, identify gaps in these services and, within year one, develop solutions to address an identified gap.
  • Silver Linings participated in a NIED (National Initiatives for Eating Disorders) forum about addressing the needs of the community. This forum took place in Winnipeg, along with the EDAC (Eating Disorders Association of Canada) Conference, and is meant to help develop a national strategy for eating disorders, to be presented in the future to Parliament.
  • Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) will take place February 1-7, 2017 and Silver Linings and other related organizations are busy planning activities and events to help raise awareness and bring the community together. If you would like to get involved in this initiative, please contact us.

Our first fundraiser took place on April 30 when a few friends and supporters of Silver Linings took on an ultra marathon distance run through the Grand Canyon. This challenging location was chosen to symbolize the arduous journey families must navigate when their child suffers from a severe eating disorder. When confronted with limited diagnosis and treatment options, the route can seem impassable. We thank all of our donors  for your amazing support.

Our organization was also selected as a charity recipient of this year’s Brett Wilson Garden Party, which took place in Calgary at the end of June. We are very grateful for this opportunity to raise funds and  awareness about the illness and its effects on individuals and families.

Lastly, we would like to thank the Calgary Women’s Run, held on August 28. All proceeds from the run were donated to Silver Linings.Though it was a cold morning, the many runners and volunteers who showed up to participate and support the cause melted our hearts.
