Savory Sounds
An evening of gustatory and auditory beauty

Last night, Fiati Five played a concert at Amore by Andrea, an authentic Italian restaurant in Longboat Key. Their performance of Italian classics and American wind quintet repertoire occurred in concurrence with Italian antipasto prepared by chef Andrea Bozzolo.

Tasty, exquisite, breathtaking

Thirty minutes before the concert, listeners started to arrive, as the nimble wait staff of Amore took drink orders and served a variety of epiphany-inspiring Italian treats: deep fried risotto, deconstructed parmigiana di melanzane, and perfectly marinated vegetable skewers. Concert attendees mingled with each other, the musicians, and Regina Compton, president of Chamber Music Campania. The listeners felt welcome and comfortable, but also eager for the first measures of the musical proceedings.
The program unfolded in two halves. The first featured contemporary American works, notably David Maslanka’s electrifying Quintet No. 3. The second half showcased the best of nineteenth-century Italian opera: Rossini, Puccini, and Verdi. Fiati Five opened with a transcription of the overture to the Barber of Seville, and Katie Dukes, soprano, joined the quintet for spine-tingling performances of “O mio babbino caro,” “Quando m’en vo,” and “O sole mio.”
At “Savory Sounds,” tastes and sounds coalesced, providing a glimpse of Italy and its cultural offerings. The music, the food, and the picturesque venue transplanted the audience away from the stormy, humid Florida summertime to the vibrant Italian countryside.
