The Mayor's Pick of the Week: Summer Our Wellington hits the streets

Wellington city is heating up, and hot off the press is the latest guide to life in the capital. The summer edition of Wellington City Council’s quarterly magazine, Our Wellington - Tō Tātou Pōneke, is being delivered to letterboxes this week. It is also now available online as a downloadable PDF and will be at various Council facilities later this week. In this issue – which covers the period 1 December 2021 to 31 March 2022 – we celebrate our people. NZ moving to traffic light system

New Zealand will move into the new traffic light system from 11.59pm Thursday 2 December, when Wellington will move to Orange. From Friday 3 December, proof of vaccination may be required in order to access a range of places like bars, gyms and restaurants. Be sure to download your vaccine pass at MyCovidRecord.nz. You can read more about the new traffic light system at covid19.govt.nz/traffic-lights.

Meri Kirihimete Pōneke

It's starting to feel a lot like Christmas, so come and enjoy all that Wellington has to offer this festive season. Feast your eyes on our magical Window Wonderland installations – filled with Christmas cheer, artist Christmas displays, an enchanting Lego display, and a party of Santa’s helpers wrapping up presents. Wellington Advent Calendar

WellingtonNZ's elves are busy building this year's Wellington Advent Calendar, finding the best deals around town. Charming illustrations from local artist Mary Guo will make this year’s countdown to Christmas more fun with each advent door between 1-24 December unveiling one of Mary’s original artworks, and a special Wellington dining, event, shopping or experience deal.

Toi Pōneke residents exhibition

The Toi Three Sixty annual residents’ exhibition is a chance for everyone to grab an art bargain with all works $360 or under – and support the local arts community at the same time. All money goes directly to the artists at this cash and carry exhibition. More info is on Our Wellington.

Super Smash at the Basin

The Firebirds and Blaze are back at the Cello Basin Reserve for the Super Smash this season. The Firebirds have a title to defend and the Blaze have one to win back. Fun with the Summer Sampler

Summer City events are looking a little different this year with COVID, but the Summer Sampler is full steam ahead! It’ll be two months of events, performances, pop-ups and activations happening every weekend in December and January along the waterfront. The free, family-friendly line-up will include everything from opera, fire and circus performances, to contemporary dance, markets, kai, and Shakespeare. More info is on Our Wellington.

Consultations are open for a number of playgrounds around Pōneke. We would love to hear your feedback on playgrounds within Hataitai, Wadestown, Breaker Bay, Paparangi, Newtown and Ōwhiro Bay. Sustainability Trust’s Christmas Cracker Market

Sustainability Trust’s annual Christmas market is your opportunity to be ethical, shop sustainable and meet the makers, crafters and creators that make you proud to #SupportLocal. There will be 20+ stalls showcasing their locally made artisanal gifts and goodies. Admission is free but please bring along cash as many stallholders won’t have eftpos. Free computing and IT help

We’re proud supporters of Smart Newtown, the one-stop shop for computer advice and friendly IT support. They are currently offering support to anyone who is having trouble accessing their vaccine pass or certificate. They can help you sign up, download it to your phone, and print and laminate it for a small printing fee ($1.20 for black and white, $2.20 for colour). Call 04 3801043 or email the team at smartnewtown@gmail.com to book in a time. Pōneke Christmas Sessions 

Sun 5 Dec | The Rogue and Vagabond

The Pōneke Christmas Sessions is an all day event featuring eight ensembles playing a wide range of music, with all ticket sales going to two very important charities - Arohanui Strings and Women’s Refuge. Arohanui Strings' mission is to create social change through the power of music. Each year, the charity offers free music lessons to over 300 children in Wellington and Lower Hutt. Women’s Refuge is a non-government, not-for-profit organisation working to help women and children experiencing domestic violence. Tickets are $10 per session.
