Happy New Year!

President BeckyI hope this holiday season has been a joyful one for you and your family. This season gives me the opportunity to reflect upon what has happened through the weeks that have sped by since July 1st. As Rotarians, we can look back on some remarkable events:
  • The fireworks sales event for the Fourth of July was a great kickoff to our year. This was a big project for our club to cover, but we had a lot of fun and experienced some good fellowship. And we made a bit of money for the cause! Thanks again to Jan for keeping us organized.
  • Giants baseball! We had a comfy bus ride to AT&T Park for a fun game at the yard. Giants lost to the Cardinals, but you can’t win them all. Dave Garavello did a nice job organizing this event.
  • District Governor Mike Andritch visited our club, and he gave us praise for our efforts. He also gave us encouragement in other avenues of service.
  • We welcomed a new member—Cheryl Waters.
  • Our exchange student, Ombeline, settled in with Russ and Alice Wilcox. She has had a remarkable experience at Alvarez High School both academically and with her extracurricular activities! She is now with her second host family.
  • I cannot say enough about our Interact Club. The students are an ambitious group! So far, they have a project of the month. The most recent was the holiday party at the women’s shelter. We will surely hear from them soon about this event.
  • We will continue to support the students of EAHS. We had the tailgate event during football season, and I know Cary has some new ideas for next year.
  • Thanks go to Martin O’Connor for organizing our Salvation Army bell-ringing event. Thank you all for your participation.
  • Thanks, too, to Mark Kimber for arranging the annual Halloween bicycle ride.
  • Our last two social events were the November Gala at the Western Stage and the holiday social at Rancho Cielo. We will hear about the social at our first meeting of the year. Looks like these events will be part of our annual event calendar.
  • I am especially grateful to Roger Powers for the great speakers and the variety of topics that he has brought to our weekly meetings.
Thank you for your kind support and guidance throughout the first part of this Rotary year. Let us continue on with a better new year for all--together we are all a gift to the world!

Yours in Rotary Service,

President Becky

Chinatown Sanitation Project

In 2015, the Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club partnered with the Corral de Tierra Rotary Club to fund the Salinas Chinatown Sanitation Project. Our Rotary Clubs had long wanted to help address the homeless situation in Chinatown, and this project provides $5,400 to pay for the toilets, stalls and accessories to be installed in the future Chinatown Health Service Center to be built and operated by Dorothy’s Place (Franciscan Workers of Junipero Serra) on East Lake Street in Salinas.

EAHS Interact Club Update

EAHSIt is only the middle of the school year and the Everett Alvarez High School Interact Club have accomplished so much! Wrapping up their best start ever with 125 total members and half of them active members. The club has already completed four major projects this semester:
  • International project - Helping fund building schools in Zimbabwe through the Sahwira Fund.
  • International project - Helped repair an earthquake damaged building in Nepal.
  • Supported the Wendy Baker Memorial Fund, a cancer patient support group at Natividad Hospital.
  • Held a party which included a clothes and toy giveaway at a local women's shelter.
In the coming year, the club anticipates putting together intake bags for the women's shelter and another party on Valentines Day, establishing "K's Closet" to distribute recycled clothes to Alvarez students, Relay for Life (American Cancer Society) and Tatum's Garden maintenance.
