Greeting from President, Becky Mier!

Queen KathyJuly marks the start of our Rotary year, and it has flown by beginning with our fireworks fundraising activities! Many thanks, Steinbeck Rotarians for giving your time to support this activity. It was a full membership project, and special thanks to Jan and Al Holmes for all the set-up work—and also to Russ Wilcox for use of his van. We were fortunate to fully staff our shifts with the energetic volunteers from Sunrise House.

Our first meeting was a fun way to get started. Cary and her crew from the Sylvan Learning Center really stumped us for a bit with the robotic, twirling birds’ project. Our club assembly gave me the opportunity to discuss some goals for this year, and your completed surveys confirm that we want to stay informed about our community events, the environment, our local public agencies—and we love our social events. Speaking of good fellowship, Dave Garavello has done a wonderful job of setting up our trip to watch the Giants and St. Louis Cardinals on August 30—just as the division races are heating up for the playoffs.

I am discovering that our meetings come to a close rather quickly for me, but I trust you all enjoyed our first speaker, Mayor Joe Gunter. We have a great line-up of speakers for the next few months already, and school is just a few weeks away. Ombeline from France is scheduled to arrive soon, and we are set to give her a wonderful, warm welcome in just a few days.

August is Membership Month for Rotary. Kathy Bozzo, Past President, is doubling up as Membership Chair, and she will introduce some ideas to stimulate the growth of our club. One of the best ways to expose prospective members is to invite them to our weekly meetings, let them enjoy our array of community speakers, and also allow them to hear about what our club is doing in our local community. That is why many of us joined. Let us Be a Gift to the World.

Yours in Rotary Service,
Mama Becky

The Queen Speaks

Queen KathyMany of us say that we want our elected officials to speak in a sincere and forthright manner. On July 22nd, Steinbeck Rotary Club had the pleasure of hearing Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter talk about our vibrant and diverse city. This he did, in a sincere and forthright manner.

As I sat listening to Mayor Gunter, I thought he’s a WYSIWYG. This being the acronym for “What you see is what you get". Modernly, it’s a term used for computing techniques. Some may recall it as a catchphrase from a popular show in the early seventies: The Flip Wilson Show. This catchphrase was first used in September, 1969, by Geraldine, Flip Wilson’s drag persona.

Mayor Gunter may or may not want to be associated with Geraldine, but both present themselves as they truly are, not who we want them to be. This to me is utterly refreshing.

Over the next 2015-2016 Rotary year, Regina's option article, The Queen Speaks, will offer a different perspective on a various number of topics.
