Goodbye Summer, Welcome Autumn!

President AnneWe will be soon saying goodbye to summer and welcoming autumn. We welcomed back Isaac from his year in Italy and said greetings to Teddy from Thailand. Thank you to all who helped with the Youth Exchange Weekend. Our new inbound students for our District are a fabulous group – energetic, interesting and eager to experience life in California. If you have the chance, spend time with Teddy. You will find it a rewarding experience. It is apropos that the Rotarian Theme for this month is Basic Education and Literacy. School has begun and this month we will be having presentations from our Interact club and EAHS leadership. We will also be seeing the fruit of our District and Global Grants. The China Town Sanitation Project is scheduled to open October 3rd and will provide wonderful services for the homeless in Salinas. Every step is a step forward when good work is done. There is an open house for the project on September 6, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Our dinner with the District Governor is scheduled for September 20, 2016 at the Crazy Horse Golf Club – put it on your calendar! Let’s continue all of the good work this club does!

If you are interested in joining us and learning more about Rotary, meet us for breakfast on Wednesdays, 7:15 a.m. at the National Steinbeck Center, 1 Main Street, Salinas, California. We would be happy to see you.

Basic Education and Literacy Month

CarySeptember is basic education and literacy month for Rotary International and an excellent month to support education in our local communities. School is back in session and students and teachers are excited for a new year of learning. In looking back over last scholastic year, the Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club was actively involved in our community in many different ways. We have, and continue to support, Everett Alvarez High School (EAHS) by sponsoring the monthly student of the month award and by donating to their projects. Each month we host the EAHS staff, students and parents to breakfast and a chance to hear a great community speaker at our Wednesday morning meeting. Being this involved has allowed our Club Members into their lives and helped many of us feel connected to the students and staff. Russ and Alice have kept the Interact Club humming along all year with guidance, meetings and projects. It is always a joy to hear what the young “Rotarians in training” are doing to make their community better. Another way our Club supported basic education was through Rotary Youth Exchange. Everyone in the Club enjoyed Ombeline’s company and helping her thrive during her year away from her family in France. We also sent and supported Isaac Guzman as he spent the year abroad in Italy. At the end of the year we had the pleasure of granting several scholarships to graduating EAHS students and we sent six students to Camp Royal. Finally, we honored our scholarship winners by sponsoring and officiating the Top 100 dinner at EAHS. Now as September begins, we look forward to a new year helping the young people in our community. We will continue to recognize a deserving EAHS student each month, help the Interact Club members reach their goals, spend time with our current RYE student from Thailand, grant more scholarships to graduating seniors, send budding leaders to Camp Royal and recognize them for their achievements.
