Mercantile Center was a proud participant in the effort to support #WeMakeEvents #RedAlertRESTART and #ExtendPUA.

We Make Events North America - a coalition of live events workers, businesses, unions, and trade bodies - participated in #RedAlertDay recently, lighting venues, homes, and cities in red across North America to raise awareness in support of the events industry.

The movement #WeMakeEvents #RedAlertRESTART and #ExtendPUA represent a major call to action, imploring the US Congress to pass the RESTART Act (S.3814) as quickly as possible, offering economic relief to the Live Events Industry, which has be shuttered since March, putting millions of people out of work.

Additionally, the movement is to support ExtendPUA.org in its efforts towards the continuation and extension of the Pandemic Unemployment Act to provide relief to those without work due to COVID-19.

Broadway Hospitality Group's Restaurant at Mercantile Center to Open Next Spring!

Broadway Hospitality Group is targeting next spring for the opening of a two-story indoor/outdoor restaurant with rooftop bar adjacent to the Mercantile Center Garage. A $4.2 million purchase and construction financing agreement was established between Webster Five Bank and 2 Mercantile LLC, it was announced recently.

The restaurant industry has been hit particularly hard during the COVID-19 pandemic – according to the National Restaurant Association, the industry could lose as much as $240 billion by year’s end – but that has not deterred the Broadway Hospitality Group, which is enthusiastic about the new downtown eatery and joining Worcester’s restaurant scene.

“Everything is going according to plan for us,” Stephen DeSousa, CEO of Broadway Hospitality Group, said Wednesday. “We haven’t pushed anything back. We continue to work on it behind the scenes. We’re hoping for an early spring opening if everything goes as planned. We’re looking to start constructing possibly in September-October, and we think it will be about a six-month project, right in time for spring, and hopefully (the pandemic) will be past us. We’re pretty positive that it will be and we’re moving forward.”

"Under the terms of the loan, Webster Five will provide the construction financing for the building core and shell and for the utility infrastructure with the tenant, Broadway Hospitality Group," said Charles “Chip” Norton, owner of 2 Mercantile LLC, in a recent statement.

The City of Worcester and UMass Memorial Healthcare Sponsored Free COVID-19 Testing

During the month of August, free walk-up testing for the COVID-19 virus was made available at two resource fairs in Worcester. One of which was conducted on the plaza behind City Hall, and the other was conducted at 19 Tacoma Street.

In an effort to simplify the experience for residents and the Worcester workforce, no appointments were necessary, and a free mask and hand sanitizer was provided with the tests.

The testing and resource fairs were part of the state's Stop the Spread Campaign, and was sponsored by the City of Worcester and UMass Memorial Healthcare COVID-19 Equity Task Force, including Worcester Interfaith.
