Aida a Success

"...the show was enriched with strong performances"
 - The News
"To say this is a good show is an understatement"
 - Tandem Studios
Aida closed on May 21st, after a fantastic season with many rave reviews. Cast, crew, production team and orchestra all worked together to create a show that not only did the society proud, but deeply touched audience members; we had many patrons attending the show more than once, each time with even better things to say!  It is wonderful to be able to bring such high quality shows to Rangiora, and it would not be possible without the countless volunteer hours that go into every aspect of the show. Our huge thanks and congratulations go to every member of the Aida team, and are extended particularly to those who had their first experience with NCMS in this show - welcome aboard!
The Hills are Alive...
NCMS is very excited to announce The Sound of Music as our first show for 2017. The show is to be staged in late April and early May of next year, and auditions will take place in October this year. We are currently taking expressions of interest for Director, Musical Director, Choreographer and Production Manager - please email if you are interested in any of these roles. Expressions of interest must be in by June 26th, at which point we will be asking all those who have expressed interest to send a formal application for their chosen role. Formal applications will close on July 17th.
Got a Case of Post-Show Blues?
Get a team together and come down to the NCMS rooms on Saturday June 18th at 7:30pm for a quiz night hosted by the wonderful Marcella Herrera! Bring your own drinks and nibbles and your general-knowledge-savvy friends - maximum of six members per team. No entry fee, and prizes are on offer (as well of course as a musical theatre round!). Get in touch with Lynne James by email at or by phone on 03 313 5363 to book your spot.
Next-Gen Boot Camp
This year Musical Theatre New Zealand is running a boot camp for young up and coming members of theatre societies around the country. The boot camp will take place from August 19th - 21st, at Berwick Lodge (near Dunedin), and is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 30. The registration fee of $45 includes accommodation and food for the weekend. NCMS committee members Briar and Holly are hoping to attend, and would love to share the experience with other NCMS members. Follow the link below for more information.

Aida DVDs
A reminder to anyone who put their name down for a DVD of the show to please make sure you have paid your $15 per DVD. The account number for payments is 03-0674-0064633-00 - please remember to put your name as a reference if paying into this account. Unfortunately this DVD is only available to cast, crew and orchestra of Aida, not to other members, in accordance with our rights restrictions for the show.
Old Scores Available
We still have a large number of scores that the committee feels will not be used by the society for any upcoming shows, which are available to our members and friends of the society for a minimal donation.
You can find the names of the first round of scores at the bottom of this newsletter. Please contact Lynne James on 03 313 5363 or at if you are interested. Please bear in mind that we will not be able to hold these scores indefinitely, so please get in quick if you are interested in any.

Please remember to contact Gavin Bailey at if you need access to the alarm code for the NCMS rooms. We will be changing the code at the end of June!
Storage Needed
Another call for anyone who knows of any storage space in which we could keep our large set pieces used in past shows. We want to be able to potentially reuse some of these pieces for upcoming productions, but unfortunately our set and tech space at the NCMS rooms has reached capacity! If you know of anyone who may be able to help, please email Gavin at
We Want Your Ideas!
Got a show you would love to see NCMS put on?
We are still taking proposals for a show to be put on in the second half of 2017. We have had a few fantastic proposals come through already, but it's not too late to put your ideas forward!

All proposals must be in by July 3rd. In your proposal, please include details of your chosen show, why you think the show would be good for North Canterbury, and details of the Creative Team members (Director, Musical Director, Choreographer). Send your written proposal through to Feel free to email if you have any further questions.
Costumes for Sale
We have four of the absolutely stunning hats which were used in Aida during the song "My Strongest Suit" for sale. The black and white fan, red poinsettia, and yellow rose/camellia hats are all for sale, along with the white and silver hat with green and blue flowers and ribbon.
We are also selling six blue men's tunics which could be adapted quite well for themes other than Egyptian - perhaps you have a group heading to the next Rugby 7's?
Contact Lynne at for more information, including pricing.
Welcome Sarah Mead
Sarah Mead School of Ballet has now started teaching at the NCMS rooms. We would like to welcome Sarah and her students to our space, and hope they enjoy the facilities that NCMS has to offer.

Costume party? Character day at school? Just looking for an excuse to dress up? Come and see our costume hire's huge range - open Mondays and Thursdays 7pm-9pm, Fridays 4-6pm and Saturdays 11am-1pm. Located at the NCMS rooms, Northbrook Road, Rangiora.
We also now offer the complete set of our fantastic Beauty and the Beast costumes (thanks to Nick Harrall and her team) for hire to other societies at $1200 plus G.S.T. and hope to eventually cover the complete cost of these costumes.
Coming up!
Keep an eye out for Aida cast members in shows all around Christchurch in the next few months: Showbiz Christchurch's Evita, MUSOC's Hair, and Repertory Theatre's King Lear will all include some familiar faces, both from Aida and previous NCMS shows. Support our NCMS team by heading along!
