Welcome to “March Madness” – as you will see below we have some great stories to share from our events this month and I encourage you all to read this whole newsletter as we have a couple of new articles worth reading.
It has been great to collaborate with the SI Mt Gambier group this month to celebrate together International Women’s Day. I would like to thank Christine Plunkett for helping to make the event a huge success.
I am really very excited to see so many new faces at our events, of course I love seeing our regulars too, it proves to me that we as a network are heading in the right direction. Of course if you have any ideas or suggestions I would love to hear them.   
Finally, officially Lydia – welcome back from maternity leave we have missed your incredible skills that you bring to the role of our Executive Officer.

March Empowering Women in Business Networking Breakfast
A fantastic breakfast was had by all at our first Empowering Women in Business Breakfast of 2016 celebrating International Women's Day with the Soroptimist International Mount Gambier Group. Many thanks to Lucy & Josslyn from Main Events & Catering for a fantastic meal & the City of Mount Gambier Council for a fabulous venue. Hosted by Di Ind, we had over 60 in attendance which was great and we heard from Christine Plunkett, who gave us a great insight in to the Soroptimist and then Ali Villani gave a short presentation about executing your elevator speech.
  
 Free Member Social Media Presentation- Wednesday the 9th March
On Wednesday March 9th we held our FREE members  Social Media presentation & training which was brought to us by Social Media ‘Rockstars’, WIBRD Board Members & Sponsors ‘Entrepreneurial Babes’, Ali Villani & Nicole Cunningham. Thanks girls, it was sensational! Thank you also to Val and the crew from the Lakes Resort Mount Gambier for kindly hosting the event.

World's Greatest Shave
Congratulations to WIBRD member Sam Rothall and the team from the Leukaemia Foundation for a very successful World's Greatest Shave held at Louise Adam’s event in Mount Gambier. Just under $10,000 was raised for a very important cause. Well done to everyone involved in the event and thank you Louise for holding this free event for Mount Gambier. WIBRD Board members Di Ind & Ali Villani even got caught up in the action!

International Women's Day Breakfast in Adelaide
On Friday the 4th of March WIBRD Chairman Di Ind and Deputy Chairman Judy McKay represented our network in Adelaide at the 2016 International Women's Day breakfast. With guest speakers such as Fran Kelly from ABC radio and over 2500 people in attendance, this was a great opportunity for both Di and Judy.
 

'Supporting Each Other in Business' Lunches
The WIBRD ‘Supporting Each Other in Business’ Lunches will be held on the 4th Friday of every month.The informal lunches are open to all women and will be a set booking at a sponsors venue such as the Commodore and will provide a forum for those that attend to talk honestly about their business, develop professional relationships to work together to support each other, help each other through obstacles and mentor one another.In line with the newly developed strategic direction and action plan, WIBRD have organised this initiative to further support women in our region in all their endeavours and the lunches are a wonderful way to get out of the office meet some new people and have lunch!
Each member pays for their individual lunch and bookings are simply a text message at least a day prior to the lunch to the particular WIBRD Board Member hosting the lunch.

Five Minutes with Barbara Lightburn
This month we are talking with Barbara Lightburn, Manager of Economic & Business Development for RDA Limestone Coast.
1/ Who is Barbara?
I grew up in the outback on a very isolated sheep station. It was a lot of fun and I learnt to do everything by working with animals on a large scale. 30,000 sheep, lots of horses, lots of dogs.  My Mum and Dad were my teachers.  My Dad read to me every night,  poetry, plays and short stories.  I spent a lot of time on my own and became self sufficient, creative and adventurous, a trait I have passed on to my children. I now live in Mt Gambier with my husband Chris, Kelpie pup Little Miss Darcie and a 16 year old Russian Blue who I refer to as Queen of The Empire.  I have four adult children and spent 15  years as their bread winning business owner and sole parent.  We are a very close supportive family and know how to work together to be successful. 
I never realized  sexism existed until I went to university and listened to the crap they were teaching about women.  From that day on I became an outspoken feminist, supporter of human rights and advocate for social justice.  
 
2/ Your main professional areas you have worked in over the years & biggest challenge you have faced professionally or personally.
I have owned and run some very successful businesses including a farm, a civil construction company that specialized in foundations, drainage and bridges, and a communication and training consultancy that specialized in the wine industry. 
My biggest professional challenge since coming to this region  has been chairing the Fork and Cork Festival.  I loved every minute of it.  I love working with ambitious game changers and what we are doing through this festival is changing culture. 
I bought my first house when I was 24, now have four and since moving to Mt Gambier have rented a house  - for the first time ever ! which is VERY challenging. 
 
3/ Your favourite place to visit in the Green Triangle area?
I love Pt Mac beach with my dog, The South Aussie with my friends, and the magnificent coastline of Southern Australia.

4/ Recommendation for our members to focus on/ take away.
If you want to be successful, you have to acknowledge success, your own - but more importantly the success of others. Listen more than you speak and ask lots of questions. Pay particular attention to the answers that make you feel uncomfortable, because there rests your truth.  Be brave. Have fun. Drink good wine. Eat local.

Noorla Yo Long Free Member Training- Sunday February the 28th
On Sunday the 28th of February WIBRD held our FREE the Noorla Yo Long Outdoor Adventure Course free training. A great day was had by all and it was a great way for those in attendance to build the team skills.

AC Care Luncheon
Our network booked a couple of tables at the Support Homeless luncheon in 2014. WIBRD have done it again for this year's luncheon that is being held at The Barn on Friday April 8th from 12 noon. Tickets are $100 per person, all proceeds go directly to AC Care to help provide much needed support and resources to members of our community. If you would like to join us at this year's event please contact Di Ind on 0417 273645 who is on the organising committee for this incredible event and would love to see as many of our members support such a worthy community fundraiser.
Congratulations Barry Maney Group
On Thursday the 17th of March Barry Many Group launched the new Ford Mustang at the Rail Lands in Mount Gambier.  The cocktail event was attended by a number of people from throughout the community and a great time was had by all.
