MOONWALK - Simulation - Rio Tinto

19. April 2016

Members of the MOONWALK team and project equipment have arrived in Rio Tinto this past weekend, as groundwork for the analogue tests were prepared. Logistic items such as power units, tents, toilets and crew cabins were installed at the test site. SHEE, Self-Deployable Habitat for Extreme Environments (a European Union Seventh Framework project), has already arrived and will provide shelter for the test subjects in the mission scenarios.

On Monday, safety procedures and instructions were provided to everyone on site and all instruments and equipment were given a final check in preparation for the mission tests to begin on Tuesday.

Today, Tuesday, 19. April, MOONWALK begins its first Earth-Analogue simulation to test the hardware and various spacewalk scenarios that have been developed by the MOONWALK team over the last 2.5 years.

Successful communication has been established with Mission Control Centre in Brussels and our simulation astronauts are ready to go. Next update to be reported soon!
