Since OUP was paying Verna's trip expenses, we decided to use Robert's airline miles for a ticket for him. We spent the first two days of our trip in Oxford, then we traveled to Gloucester, where we spent two days with Mary Pearce and Catherine Young, Verna's colleagues.
Finally we spent two days in London, acting like tourists. It was a wonderful trip, so nice for Verna to finally be able to travel together with Robert.
One of the highlights of being in Oxford, was the opportunity to tour the almost 1,000 year-old Christ Church Cathedral with our friends, John and Kwai Roberts.
In Gloucester, we took a ride on the canal. All the bridges have to be opened to let the larger boats through. They still have a hand-operated swing bridge.
We saw the chapel where George Whitfield preached his first sermon a week after being ordained.
In London, we watched the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace from Victoria Plaza.
This fulfilled a dream Verna had since childhood.
We took a cruise on the Thames river, sailing under the London Bridge (which actually did fall down) and the Tower Bridge near the Tower of London which was used as a prison and execution tower.
Verna's trip to Mexico
When Verna was in Ireland at the International Linguistics Consultants' conference, she met Steve Marlett, who invited her to Oaxaca, Mexico to participate in a Dictionary workshop for language personnel working on bilingual dictionaries. Verna left on October 25th and returned home on Saturday, October 31st.
One of the highlights was asking Millie to share how I had helped her load her bilingual dictionary onto her smart phone and how she was going to take it with her to the market to show the people and ask them for help with the entries.
Another highlight was the food. I was introduced to mole, a mixture of chocolate, chilies, and various other ingredients; to corn smut, Mexican truffles; and to various other tasty dishes.
Robert is enjoying his new role as the co-author of An Exegetical Summary of Acts. Currently, he is working on Acts chapter 10, verse 10.
