Robert is editing and proof-reading the lectionaries, written by SIL's Jim Pohlig, for Jeremiah and I and II Chronicles - making corrections, additions, and deletions to them. Robert has finished Jeremiah chapters 1, 17, 20, 23, 31, 33 and 38. Currently, he is working on I Chronicles chapter 15.
In his spare time, Robert is learning Old Testament Hebrew in order to be more effective in editing the Exegetical Summary (lectionary) series for the Old Testament.
This year's annual meeting for the Linguistic Society of America was held on Times Square in New York City on the first weekend in January. Verna spoke to 90 people demonstrating the Lexicography tools that SIL has developed.
In February, Verna went to Hawaii where she taught the Rapid Word Collection methodology at the International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation together with colleagues. She also spent time, manning the SIL book table.
In March, Verna was invited to speak at the SIL Leadership meetings in Texas on the topic of Digital Strategies. Between 80 - 85 SIL leaders from around the world gathered at the Lakeview Camp and Retreat Center in Waxahachie for their annual meetings to discuss plans, policies, and strategies. This gave Verna an opportunity to network with many people concerning dictionary work.
From the field
When we first moved to Sopu, Papua New Guinea to do Bible translation, the only way in was by plane. The airstrip was at a 12% grade and there was only one way to take off and that was downhill. If we hadn't lifted off by the end of the runway, we would have fallen nearly 4,000 feet toward the bottom of the river canyon. Our very lives depended on skilled pilots and airworthy planes. Check out this story about pilot, Dave Barton, flying in Papua New Guinea: https://thepngexperience.wordpress.com/2019/01/22/the-place-of-the-word/
