In July, we took Nathaniel, our oldest grandson to Nova Scotia as a High School graduation present.
The first two nights we spent on a schooner in the LaHave harbor. We visited Peggy's Cove on the way to Tatamagouche to my sister's place. We did a variety of fun, family, and farm activities on their bee-keeping farm. It had been more than 10 years since I had visited my sister.
In August, we drove to Goshen, Indiana for Robert's siblings annual luncheon at his sister, Fern's place. This is always such a great time of reminiscing.
Association for Linguistic Typology Conference (ALT)
When I was tending the SIL International book table at the Linguistic Society of America Annual meeting in New York City in January of this year and demonstrating Webonary, Prof Silvia Luraghi (one of the ALT conference organizers) approached me, introduced herself and invited me to come to Pavia, Italy for the 13th conference of the Association for Linguistic Typology to be held at the University of Pavia in Italy on September 4 - 6th, 2019 to preside over an SIL book table. So after discussions with my supervisor and much planning, Robert and I traveled to Pavia, Italy for this conference. We traveled by car, plane, train (up to 250 kph), taxi and by foot.
The conference organizers were very excited to have us there and thanked me several times for coming. The conference lasted for three days and there were around 220 registrants. When people came by our table, I would ask if they had heard of SIL. Many people had heard about SIL, but not many people had heard about the services and products we have available for creating bilingual dictionaries, so I invited them to take a brochure, describing SIL's work. Robert filled in for me when I went to sessions, for lunch and breaks or if I was busy with someone. Together we talked to more than 50 people, which is close to a quarter of the people at the conference. I made several useful contacts for my work.
Italy has a lot of old buildings - churches, villas, castles, palaces, and universities. We stayed in a villa built in the 1700s. The conference was held at the University of Pavia, established in 825. We took an extra day to do some sight-seeing.
Robert is editing and proof-reading Old Testament lectionaries - making corrections, additions, and deletions. He has finished 2 Chronicles chapter 36; Hosea chapters 2, 6, and 11; Nehemiah chapter 8; and Zephaniah chapters 2 and 3. Currently, he is working on Zechariah chapters 9, 12, and 13.
In his spare time, Robert is learning Old Testament Hebrew in order to be more effective in editing the Exegetical Summary (lectionary) series for the Old Testament.
